Wichita Wild News Release
WICHITA, Kan.--In a highly anticipated rematch between the Oklahoma Defenders (4-4) and Wichita Wild (6-1), the Wild once again came out with their second win over the Defenders this season 67-37 thanks to ignited play in the second half. Quarterback Rocky Hinds led the way for the Wild, who was 13 for 20 throwing seven touchdowns, tying his single game record with the Wild. Receivers Jarrel Kelly and Joe Kassanavoid held Hinds' favor in the game as both players hauled in three touchdowns apiece.
The game started with the Defender's highly efficient offense playing exactly the way the Wild anticipated, but could still not stop them. Oklahoma scored on their very first play of the game on a 25 yard bomb from QB Brady May to Isaiah Anderson for a quick 7-0 lead. Wichita responded with a pass from Hinds to Kelly, who escaped multiple players to scamper into the end zone. On the Defenders' following drive the Wild defense withstood a six and a half minute drive and only gave up a field goal, giving Oklahoma a 10-7 lead. The team then traded touchdowns as Oklahoma's Anderson returned a kickoff for his second touchdown on the night and Hinds found Kassanavoid from seven yards out to retake the lead 21-17 heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter was less exciting, with only two scores recorded; a pass from May to Patrick Jones and a Hinds finding Kelley for the second time of the night. The first half ended on a blocked Ernesto Lacayo field goal attempt that Oklahoma recovered and took into the end zone for a touchdown as time expired, leaving the Wild down 30-28 at halftime.
The Wild kicked it up several notches on both sides of the ball in the second half, with the Wild defense shutting out the Defenders and the Wild offense firing on all cylinders, scoring four touchdowns. Hinds started the scoring in the third quarter on a read option resulting in a seven yard run for a touchdown, followed by back to back catches in the end zone by Kassanavoid to extend the wild lead 51-28. The Wild ended the third quarter with a blocked field goal by Jason Catchings and Dan Kontz fumble recovery for a touchdown, his second defensive score in two games, to leave the Wild in the lead 58-28 at the end of the quarter.
May punched in a touchdown of his own on a 1 yard rush to break the Defender's drought, but that would be all Oklahoma could muster against the swarming Wild defense. All units of the Wild had a piece of the action in the fourth quarter with Kelley catching his third touchdown on the night, Moss and Jenkins on a shared sack fumble for a safety and a Lacayo field goal to give the Wild a hard-fought 67-37 win.
The Wild hit the road next week, Saturday, May 3rd to take on the Salina Bombers (4-2) in their first meeting since the 2013 CPIFL Championship game. Kick-off for the game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on 1410 KGSO or streamed live on americaone.com for a small fee.
