Portland, Maine - Alex Binelas blasted a two-run homer in the seventh inning, but the comeback fell short, as the Portland Sea Dogs (47-51, 17-12) lost 9-5 to the Erie SeaWolves (58-39, 19-9) on Wednesday at Hadlock Field.
Erie started the scoring in the top of the first inning against Portland starter Victor Santos. Daniel Cabrera led off with a single and Andrew Navigato doubled, putting runners at second and third. Parker Meadows lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Cabrera, giving the SeaWolves a 1-0 lead. Quincy Nieporte reached on an infield single, driving in Navigato to increase their lead to 2-0.
The Sea Dogs responded in the bottom of the first against SeaWolves starter Chance Kirby. David Hamilton walked and advanced to second on his 50th steal of the season. Ceddanne Rafaela grounded out to second base, executing the hit and run, scoring Hamilton to bring the lead down to one run, 2-1.
The scoring halted until the top of the fifth inning when the SeaWolves brought in four runs. Nieporte drove in the first run with an RBI single and Dillon Dingler pushed in the second run with a bases-loaded walk. Dane Myers scored a run on an RBI groundout and Gage Workman capped off the inning with a run-scoring infield single, making it a 6-1 lead.
Portland drove in one run in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Izzy Wilson homered to right-center. It was his sixth of the season and made it a 6-2 game. Erie answered with a run of their own in the top of the sixth. Navigato singled and Meadows walked. Nieporte flied out to right, moving Navigato up to third. In the next at-bat, Meadows stole second, drawing an errant throw from Sea Dogs catcher Elih Marrero and bringing in Navigato from third, making it 7-2.
The Sea Dogs kept chipping away at the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Stephen Scott led off the inning with a walk. Binelas stepped up to the plate and launched a two-run homer to right-center. It was his seventh of the year and brought Portland within three runs, 7-4.
Erie struck again in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Nieporte drove in another run, this time with a solo shot to right field. It was his 22nd homer of the year and expanded the SeaWolves lead to 8-4.
Both teams traded runs in the ninth inning. Michael D La Cruz walked, and Gage Workman drove him in with a triple, adding to the SeaWolves lead 9-4. In the bottom of the ninth, Christian Koss led off with a walk. Two outs later, Nick Northcut doubled down the left field line, scoring Koss. That was all the offense the Sea Dogs could muster, losing to the SeaWolves 9-5.
Kirby (8-3, 2.55 ERA) picked up the win, going 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out eight. Santos (7-8, 4.97 ERA) worked through 4.1 innings, surrendering four runs on five hits, walking three, and striking out seven in his eighth loss of the season.
The Sea Dogs and SeaWolves play the third game of a six-game series at Hadlock Filed on Thursday with a 6:00 PM first pitch. Portland's starter is to be announced and will face Erie LHP Adam Wolf (5-3, 3.53 ERA).
