Seat Deposit = Nike Sports Bra Goes to a Young Girl in Need
March 9, 2021 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
Angel City FC News Release
LOS ANGELES - Today Angel City Football Club (ACFC) announced that seat deposits for the inaugural season at the team's home pitch at the Banc of California Stadium will open to the public at 8 a.m. PST on March 30, 2021 at www.angelcity.com. Further, in support of the team's mission to make an impact on and off the field, ACFC will donate a Nike sports bra to a young girl in need for each seat deposit made. Nike is donating 22,000 sports bras to Good360 to fuel the efforts, aligning with the 22,000-seat capacity at the stadium ACFC will call home upon kick-off in April 2022.
Beginning in 2022, ACFC and Nike will work with Good360, a global nonprofit organization focused on product philanthropy and purposeful giving, to organize the donation of sports bras to nonprofits serving girls in Los Angeles and beyond. Along with the product donation, these community organizations will also receive Nike's Made to Play Coach's Guide to help them create a session for the girls in their program to learn about the importance of play and sport in their life, and to receive their sports bra.
"Our impending seat deposit launch is a monumental step for our club and brings us one huge step forward to welcoming our fans to the Banc to cheer on our team and create new traditions," said Julie Uhrman, Co-Founder and President of ACFC. "Also, we are grateful that Nike has come out in a big way to help young girls stay involved in sport by providing a donation to Good360 that will allow us to gift nonprofit organizations that provide programming for girls with sports bras to provide not just comfort, but confidence."
"We believe that all kids are made to play, but we also know that girls face more challenges to getting, and staying, active than boys. That's why we're investing in solutions that remove those barriers - whether it's increased access to play and sport, a trained coach or having the product they need to play with confidence," said Caitlin Morris, Vice President of Social & Community Impact at NIKE, Inc. "Angel City Football Club shares our belief in strengthening communities through play, starting here in LA with a strategy to help girls see their potential through the power of sport."
Staggering statistics about the dropout rate of girls in sports:
One-third (32%) of girls reported that sometimes boys made fun of them or made them feel uncomfortable while they practiced, and nearly one-third of girls (31%) expressed that appearance-related reasons were part of their motivation for their participation.
By age 14, girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys.
By age 17, at the end of puberty, more than half of girls (51%) will have quit sports and seven out of 10 girls who quit sports during puberty felt they did not belong in sports.
