Sean Quirk Returns as Head Coach in 2020
The Boston Cannons announced today that Sean Quirk will return as head coach in 2020. The longest-tenured active head coach in Major League Lacrosse, Quirk's return in the league's 20th year marks his fifth season with the Cannons.
"I am thrilled to be back for my fifth season with the Boston Cannons, the most dedicated professional lacrosse organization in the world," Quirk said. "We have been building the last several seasons, last year reaching the MLL semifinals. In 2020 our only goal as an organization, coaching staff and players is to win the MLL championship."
Last season, Quirk led Boston to a 9-7 record and their first playoff appearance in his time as head coach. Quirk's 2019 team jumped to a 3-0 start to a 16-game season, finishing the regular season in third place.
Quirk's first trip to the MLL Championship Weekend saw a high-intensity, back-and-forth semifinals matchup versus the Denver Outlaws. Boston came up just short in Denver, but Quirk said his expectations are going to be even higher in 2020.
"Sean is a true professional and has led the development of the Cannons' growth and culture over the last four MLL seasons," said Team President Ian Frenette. "We're excited to extend his contract for 2020 and take his lead toward building a championship-contender in 2020."
Quirk holds a 25-33 overall record with the Cannons. Prior to joining the Cannons as head coach, Quirk was the head coach of the Endicott College men's lacrosse team, where he still serves as associate athletic director. In his 18-year tenure at Endicott, Quirk led the Gulls to a 243-95 record, including nine NCAA tournament appearances.
