San Diego Seals News Release
The San Diego Seals kept their hot streak alive on Saturday night against Calgary with a come from behind win at Pechanga Arena San Diego. The win secures the season series against the West Division foe.
"Calgary put a lot of pressure on us early," said General Manager and Head Coach Patrick Merrill. "They put us on our heels in the first quarter. Our guys showed a lot of reserve and character. Our defense got back to playing the way that makes us successful, our offense started burying a few. We had a great second half and pulled off a huge character win."
Forward Austin Staats led the Seals offense with nine points, tying his career high. Forwards Wesley Berg, Zack Greer and Tre Leclaire each added a pair of goals, while defensemen Graydon Bradley and Tor Reinholdt both netted goals.
"Austin is such a clutch big game player," continued Merrill. "He played with a lot of heart tonight and was able to step up and lead us offensively. The rest of the offense was able to feed off his energy and I'm proud of his effort tonight."
The Seals defense and goaltending was able to hold Calgary to only one second quarter goal to complete the comeback and earn the win. Goalies Frank Scigliano and Chris Origlieri combined for 30 saves on the night.
"It was good to get Frankie out there again after a long break," continued Merrill. "Once he settled in, I felt like he took over the game, especially in the fourth quarter. He bought us time to make our comeback. Chris was also able to come in and stabilize us for Frankie to get his bearings and I'm proud of them both."
The Seals have a bye week before heading to Fort Worth to face Panther City on Saturday, February 12. The team will look to extend their win streak to six straight games.
"Panther City gave us all we could handle a couple weeks ago at home," concluded Merrill. "We have some banged up guys. This bye weekend will be nice to get prepared and healthy, and ready for another big divisional game."
