Sea Devils Honored for Launch

January 31, 2006 - National Football League Europa (NFLE)
Hamburg Sea Devils News Release

THE Hamburg Sea Devils have been honored for their record-breaking inaugural season in the NFL Europe League by being awarded third place in the prestigious Sports Marketing Award 2006, presented by Germany's leading print marketing sources SPONSORs, ESB and w&v.

The prize was awarded last night (Monday) in a ceremony at the ISPO Sports Sponsoring Congress in Munich. The winner was identified through public online voting on www.sponsors.de.

The Sea Devils achieved an average attendance of almost 18,000 during the 2005 NFLEL season, the most of any first-year team since the league reformed in 1995.

"I am very excited about this appreciation and the valuation of our and the whole of NFL Europe's work," said Sea Devils general manager Kathrin Platz. "A little more than a year ago the NFL Europe League came to Hamburg with a vision. Today I hold in my hands the prize for all the work, passion and will to bring something unique to Hamburg."

Platz thanked all her Sea Devils colleagues, team sponsors and partners, as well as all the fans for being "a major part in winning this award". Despite being the nominee with the smallest marketing budget, the Sea Devils placed ahead of illustrious names such as Philips, Deutsche Bank, Continental and Postbank.

Naming the Sea Devils in third place, the organisers cited the Sea Devils' "positioning as a unique event, combining the entertainment and party factor with an athletic, dynamic and exciting sport".

T-Systems was announced as winner ahead of Allianz and the Sea Devils. Platz said, "Third place is a huge honor for the whole NFL Europe League as well all American football teams and clubs in the northern Germany area. The job done by so many football-hungry people all over Europe, Germany and, in particular, the northern regions of Germany, has built the cornerstone for this success."

The award is the latest significant development in the sport in Germany, following the NFL's approval of the NFLEL's five-year business plan and a new deal with Germany's number one free-to-air television station, ARD, which airs Super Bowl XL live on Sunday, February 5, and will feature extensive coverage of the NFLEL season, which kicks off on March 18.
