June 19, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Diego Loyal News Release
SAN DIEGO - Alejandro Guido scored a goal for the highlight reel but it wasn't enough for San Diego Loyal SC in a 2-1 loss against visiting Las Vegas Lights Sunday at Torero Stadium.
Guido sent SD Loyal's largest crowd (5,124) this season into a frenzy when he opened up the scoring with a right-footed blast from 25 yards out for the 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. But Las Vegas responded with goals by Caleb Jennings (17 minute) and Daniel Trejo (68th minute) to earn its first ever win against SD Loyal in eight meetings.
SD Loyal, (7W-4L-4D, 25 points) who debuted wearing its "Siempre Leal" kit, was unbeaten against the team from the desert in its first seven matches. Sunday, it was the Lights earning three points as it held on to a late SD Loyal surge on 619 day.
Las Vegas (6W-6L-4D, 22 points) sent in the game winner when Trejo, a second half sub, dribbled into the penalty area and sifted through SD Loyal defenders Kyle Adams and Grant Stoneman before firing a shot past Guerrero. Jennings started the Las Vegas Lights comeback in the first half when he found the net on a low rolling shot past Austin Guerrero just inside the right post. Jennings took a through pass from midfield and sped away from defenders to set up the scoring play and tie the match 1-1.
Las Vegas' first goal came 10 minutes after Guido's spectacular score. The Chula Vista native took a ball from Charlie Adams, dribbled a few times into open space and took the shot to beat Las Vegas goalkeeper Abraham Romero, who didn't stand a chance. The scoring play came seconds after Jack Blake had his penalty kick blocked by Romero, who had a handful of key saves throughout the match.
The Week 15 USL Championship matchup was the second of four-straight home matches this month for SD Loyal. The only other loss SD Loyal experienced at Torero Stadium this season was a 5-2 loss against Louisville City FC on April 16. SD Loyal continues its homestand with a match against Indy Eleven on Saturday June 15. Tickets are available now at sdloyal.com/tickets.
