San Diego Loyal News Release

San Diego - San Diego Loyal SC has an opponent for its second appearance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Head Coach Nate Miller's team will host Albion San Diego of the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) in the Second Round of the historic competition from the SDSU Sports Deck at a to-be-determined date and time between April 4-6.

The United States Soccer Federation released the pairings and hosting scenarios for the Second Round of the 2023 National Championship tournament today. Twenty four Division II and 22 Division III professional teams will see their first tournament action, joining 14 First Round winners to feature 30 matches in total across the country.

This is SD Loyal's second time competing in the U.S. Open Cup. The single elimination tournament pairs teams from every level of play. SD Loyal drew Albion San Diego due to U.S. Soccer's Second Round Draw procedures that prioritize team pairings based on geographical proximity. 2023 will be the second time SD Loyal faces Albion San Diego in the Second Round of the tournament. In 2022, SD Loyal defeated Albion San Diego 2-1 to advance to the Third Round, before the club fell 1-0 to Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy.

SD Loyal continues preparations for the upcoming 2023 USL Championship season with its preseason schedule. Miller's team heads into its third preseason match where it will visit Major League Soccer side LAFC at 5 p.m. Saturday at BMO Field.
