August 11, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Diego Loyal News Release
SAN DIEGO - Charlie Adams converted a second half penalty kick to help San Diego Loyal SC earn three more points with a 1-0 win against visiting Monterey Bay FC Wednesday night at Torero Stadium.
Adams placed his chance from the spot right down the middle as his team extended its winning streak to five matches for the first time in club history. Keeping close to first place San Antonio FC in the Western Conference standings, SD Loyal has now won eight of its last nine, including a 6-1 record at home. Coach Landon Donovan's squad outscored its opposition 16-2 during those six wins at home.
The 4,141 in attendance at Torero Stadium surged into celebration in the 59th minute Wednesday night after Adams gave SD Loyal the 1-0 lead. The SD Loyal team captain converted the penalty kick when he blasted a left-footed shot down the middle as Monterey Bay goalkeeper Antony Siaha dove to his right. It was the fourth goal of the season for the Englishman.
SD Loyal (15W-5L-4D, 49 points) nearly scored on a handful of occasions late in its first-ever match against Monterey Bay FC (8W-12L-2D, 26 points), a team that came in riding a five-straight shutout streak. But the visitors withstood the late SD Loyal surge and were able to keep the league's top-scoring offense to one goal thanks in part to Siaha, who made a handful of key saves. Those saves included blocking a pair of powerful Jack Blake shots in a first half that was dominated in possession by the homeside.
SD Loyal goalkeeper Koke Vegas was also key in the win as record his second-consecutive clean sheet.
SD Loyal finished back-to-back home matches with wins as it heads into its third match in eight days. This time, Donovan's team will travel east to face Birmingham Legion FC on Saturday, Aug. 13 (5 p.m.) in the first-ever meeting between clubs. Fans can tune into Saturday's match on The CW San Diego, ESPN+ and Azteca America 33.
