Scott and Leto Help Juggs Snap Four Game Winning Streak

June 13, 2004 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF)
New York/New Jersey Juggernaut News Release

Montclair, NJ- The NY/NJ Juggernaut snapped a four game losing streak in front of a crowd of over 1,200 with a 4-0 win over the California Sunbirds. Juggernaut starting pitcher Amanda Scott hurled a two-hit shutout, striking out six, to lead the Naut's to the win.

After failing to score in the first two innings despite a leadoff single in the first and a leadoff walk in the second, the Juggernaut capitalized on centerfielder Venus Taylor's bloop hit to center to lead off the third. After Taylor advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball, first baseman Kellie Wilkerson scored Taylor with a line drive hit up the middle that deflected off California starter Amy Kyler.

The Juggernaut tacked on three insurance runs in the fourth when they jumped on California reliever, Jodie Cox. With two outs, second baseman Carri Leto drove in Taylor and designated hitter Lauren Bauer. Bauer reached base with an infield single and Taylor drew a two-out walk. Leto lead the Juggernaut offensively again, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. She currently leads the league with a .447 batting average. Leto would eventually score the fourth and final run on a throwing error by the Sunbirds.

The Sunbirds utilized three pitchers in the span of six full innings. Kyler started the game, pitching three full innings, and giving up three hits and one earned run. Cox replaced her in the fourth giving up two hits and two earned runs in just two innings pitched. Kristen Voak kept the Sunbirds within four by giving up no hits and no runs in the sixth inning.

Offensively, the Sunbirds only mustered two hits off of Scott. Catcher Julie Marshall went 1-for-3 and leftfielder Christen Bedwell went 1-for-2.

The 4-0 win marked the first of four games that will be aired live on the YES Network. Sunday night games on June 20th, July 11th, and August 8th will all be featured at 7:35 pm on the YES Network.
