ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – With the start of the 2002-2003 season just three months away, the New Mexico Scorpions took a giant step towards fielding a championship caliber team, and fulfilling the league's rookie rule by signing Martin Beck on Wednesday.

Martin Beck, who hails from Prostejov, Czech Republic, became the team's second rookie inked for the 2002-2003 season (the CHL requires 3). Beck started his career in the 1999-2000 season playing major junior hockey for the Moose-Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League. He was little used that year, tallying 7 goals and 1 assist in 69 games. From there, Beck traveled back to his home country playing for the Havirov Panthers of the Czech Junior League in both the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 seasons. Over the two seasons he appeared in 45 games amassing 9 goals and 27 assists before making his professional debut with the Senators Rosice of the Czech Elite League in the 2001-2002 season. In 21 professional games the twenty year old tallied 2 goals and 1 assist.

"It's great for me", said Beck. "I'm looking forward to playing in the Central Hockey League, and hopefully having a good year not just for myself, but as a team."

"He's a good, smooth skater", said Scorpions Head Coach Pat Dunn. "He's a long shot...I got a lead on him from a friend in Canada. We're not going to expect too much out of him, but who knows...we think he could be our next Tyler Baines."
