Scorpions Come From Behind In Third Period
March 23, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The Scorpions came from behind for a 5-4 victory over Amarillo Saturday night. The win gave the Scorpions the third seed in the Southern Conference playoffs which start Friday in Arizona.
New Mexico knew going into the game that getting the first goal would be important. They did just that when Aaron MacInnis found the net with a power play goal.
The two teams combined for five goals in the second period, inkling three in the last three minutes. Amarillo tied the game up when Bill Vandermeer stuffed a rebound home. The Gorillas took their first lead of the game at the 14:40 mark as Austin Sutter scored for the 24th time this season.
The Scorpions came back when Craig Macdonald took a wrist shot and fired it past goalie Dan Bauer at the 14:42 mark of the second period. With New Mexico back on the power play, it was a little tic-tac-toe action to regain the lead. Chris Robertson passed to Macdonald who found Konrad Reeder open on the back door for his 41st goal of the season.
Amarillo once again showed they have a lot of fight left in them. They tied the game when Chris Lipsett scored at the 18:38 mark. With only three seconds remaining in the middle period, Jason Chafe found a bouncing puck in front of the Scorps net and was able tuck it just under goaltender Mike Minard.
The Scorpions knew what they had to do in the third period. Macdonald tied the game up with his second goal of the night at the 3:24 mark. With less than a minute on the clock, rookie Ray Ortiz scored the biggest goal of his career, giving the Scorpions the victory.
The Scorpions will face the Arizona Sundogs in the Conference Semifinals for the second straight season. The series starts in Prescott Valley on Friday and Saturday. Join fellow Scorps fans at Turtle Mountain Brewery in Rio Rancho for a "Watch Party." The game begins at 8:05 p.m.
