Charlotte County Redfish News Release

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FL- Is it the Charlotte County Skittles? What about the Frozen Ropes? Better yet, how about the Redfish!?

The Charlotte County Professional Baseball Club is proud to announce that they have found an identity, thanks to Steve Padgett. His submission of the name "Redfish" was chosen from over 1,000 entries in the Charlotte County baseball "Name the Team" contest, presented by Wireless Zone, an authorized Verizon retailer. He will receive a pair of season tickets for the 2007 Inaugural Season and will also have the opportunity to present the line-up cards on Opening Day at Charlotte County Stadium.

"Redfish" struck Charlotte County team officials as a logical choice for the name of the new baseball franchise. Widely known as scrappy, smart, and thrilling fighters, Redfish have a reputation for homing in their foes like heat-seeking missiles. Fishing enthusiasts and residents of the Florida Gulf Coast know that the Charlotte Harbor is not only a fishing hotbed, but arguably the Redfish capital of the world - a site with some of the highest concentrations of these popular and beautiful species.

For those who follow professional fishing, the Redfish have brought the spotlight to the Charlotte community by way of the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup. The annual tournament has been known to bring some 10,000 people to downtown Punta Gorda to be a part of the action - not to mention national television exposure via ESPN2. Charlotte has become one of the most appealing stops on the Redfish Cup due to the great deal of community involvement and high crowd turnout.

"Some of the common themes in the contest entries were water, fish and the notorious Florida Sun. We all know how important the Redfish are to Charlotte County, but the more we learned about them we found that they are very challenging, smart, and worthy adversaries. These are qualities that any sports fan would want in their hometown team," notes Redfish GM Omar Roque. "Furthermore, 'Redfish' is a unique name that has not been used in minor league sports - a name that affords us some creativity and flexibility in marketing the team throughout the region."

Select team merchandise items are now available, including caps and t-shirts featuring the Charlotte County Club's new logo. Season tickets are now on sale for the 2007 inaugural season, with a $50 deposit required to reserve a seat.

Charlotte County, FL, Albany, GA, Aiken, SC, Bradenton, FL and Macon, GA will be joined by one final South Coast League charter franchise. The SCL is a six-team based independent professional baseball league located in the Southeastern U.S. First pitch is slated for May of 2007.
