Saturday Rewind: Taking a Look at Last Night's Action in the USHL

Green Bay 6, Chicago 2

Mikey DeAngelo scored three times in boosting Green Bay to a 6-2 win over Chicago Saturday.

The Gamblers, who have gone 4-0-0-1 in their last five games and stand atop the Eastern Conference standings with a 16-6-1-1 record, got on the board first when DeAngelo scored midway through the opening period. Chicago's Mick Thompson countered at 11:02 and at the end of the first the score stood 1-1.

Lukas Sawchyn put the host Steel up 2-1 when he scored at 7:24 of the second, but goals from DeAngelo at 9:36 and Ben Poitras at 18:58 gave the Gamblers a 3-2 edge after 40 minutes of action.

A trio of goals in the third period put the game away for Green Bay. Scoring for the Gamblers were Jason Gallucci at 4:08, William Hughes at 13:33 and DeAngelo at 17:52.

Adam Gajan, who leads the USHL in saves, turned aside 36 of 38 shots for Gamblers to get the win.

Lincoln 5, Fargo 3

The two teams traded goals in the first two periods before Lincoln scored three times in the third period in claiming a 5-3 home win over league-leading Fargo Saturday night.

Juan Copeland got the ball rolling when he scored for Lincoln at 11:16 of the opening period. Reid Daavettia responded for the Force at 19:53 and at the end of the first the score stood 1-1.

Jack Pechar's ninth goal of the season, which came at the 0:52 mark of the second put the Stars up a second time, but when Jake Fisher tallied at 4:57, the score was 2-2.

Lincoln pulled away in the final period on goals from Reese Shaw at 5:11, Jacob Rombach at 14:16 and Blake Montgomery at 18:42. Masun Fleece responded for the Force at 19:13 in closing out the scoring in the contest.

Yan Shostak had 27 saves for the victorious Stars, who upped their record to 7-14-0-2 with the win. The Force, who entered the game riding a five-game winning streak, saw their record fall to 19-3-1-0 with the loss.

Waterloo 3, Des Moines 2

It took a late goal from the league's rookie scoring leader for Waterloo to claim a 3-2 win over Des Moines Saturday.

Des Moines took an early 1-0 lead on Braedon Ford's goal at 3:40 of the first.

Matthew Frost responded for the host Black Hawks at 1:11 of the second and at the end of two periods of action, the score stood 1-1.

Des Moines tallied at 5:31 of the third on a goal from Owen West, but Waterloo responded at 8:30 on a Teddy Townsend marker. John Mustard scored at 16:46 of the to put the game away for the Black Hawks. A Providence College commit, Mustard now has 27 points on the season with 14 goals and 13 assists to lead all rookie scorers in the USHL.

Now 12-10-0-0 on the season, Waterloo received a 35-save effort from Calvin Vachon with the win. The Buccaneers dropped to 9-11-4-0 with the loss.

Sioux City 5, Omaha 4 ot

Sioux City found itself facing a 3-0 first-period deficit before rallying to claim a 5-4 win in overtime over Omaha Saturday.

Ethan Fredericks tallied the first of his three goals in the game at 0:35 of the first to get things going for the visiting Lancers. And when David Deputy scored at 8:55 and Fredericks tallied on the power play at 17:25, Omaha headed into the locker room at the end of the first owning a 3-0 lead.

Sioux City scored twice in the second to cut the deficit to one on goals from Trey Jefferis at 14:05 and Colby Saganiuk at 15:22.

Fredericks completed the hat trick at 7:07 of the third, but Owen Keefe scored at 18:14 to make it 4-3 and Ethan Gardula scored at 18:26 to send the game into overtime. Gardula then completed the comeback for the Musketeers when he tallied at 1:23 of overtime.

Dylan Silverstein, who was making his first appearance in a Sioux City sweater, stopped 20 shots to record the win as the Musketeers upped their record on the season to 15-7-4-0.

Muskegon 6, Sioux Falls 2

Muskegon scored the first goal of the game and never trailed enroute to skating to a 6-2 win at Sioux Falls Saturday.

Jack Galanek got the Lumberjacks on the board at 11:37 of the opening period before J.J. Wiebusch responded for the Stampede at 19:15.

Hunter Anderson's marker at 14:09 of the second put Muskegon up a second time and after two periods of action, the Lumberjacks held a 2-1 lead.

Muskegon began to pull away with three straight goals to begin the third period. Ty Henricks tallied goals at 8:56 and 10:24 before David Klee made it 5-1 at 13:02. Jaksen Panzer's seventh goal of the season, which came at 16:20, cut the deficit to three, but Cody Croal scored into an empty net at 18:10 to put the game away for the Jacks.

Beau Lane, who was making his first appearance for Muskegon, stopped 32 shots in getting the decision. The Lumberjacks upped their record to 13-9-1-1 with the win, while Sioux Falls now stands 13-10-1-1 with the loss.

Madison 6, Dubuque 2

Madison scored the last five goals of the game in overpowering Dubuque 6-2 in USHL home action Saturday.

The Fighting Saints got a power play goal from Noah Powell to open the scoring at 7:35 of the first period. Austin Burnevik replied for the Capitols at 12:20, but a Colin Frank goal at 12:49 put Dubuque up 2-1 and that's how the score stood at the end of the first 20 minutes of action.

Madison flipped the switch in the second period, taking a 3-2 lead after Brendan Lamb scored at 3:35 and Max Nagel tallied at 7:44.

Nagel got his second goal of the game when he scored at 1:34 of the third. Burnevik, who also had two assists in the game and has moved into a tie for second place in the league scoring race with 15 goals and 12 assists for 27 points, scored at 4:10. Jack Henry closed out the scoring in the contest when he tallied at 11:56.

Carsen Musser had 22 saves for the Caps, who upped their record on the season to 11-6-4-2 with the win. Dubuque saw its record drop to 15-6-1-2 with the loss.

Cedar Rapids 5, Youngstown 2

Cedar Rapids got two goals apiece from Jack Larrigan and Riley Bassen as the RoughRiders skated to a 5-2 home win over Youngstown Saturday night.

Larrigan scored at 1:08 of the opening period to start things for the RoughRiders, who ended a seven-game losing streak with the win. Zach Morin responded for the Phantoms at 3:51, but when Larrigan scored at 12:50 and Bassen tallied at 17:12, Cedar Rapids held a 3-1 lead at the end of the first.

Kuzma Voronin cut the lead to 3-2 with his goal coming at 0:32 of the second, but Bassen scored at 15:34 for his second goal of the game and at the end of 40 minutes of play, it was Cedar Rapids 4, Youngstown 2.

Colin Grable scored into an empty net at 19:29 for the final goal of the game.

Rudy Guimond had 19 stops as the RoughRiders upped their record to 9-12-2-1 for the season. Owen Bartoszkiewicz was credited with 24 saves as Youngstown saw its record fall to 15-6-2-0.
