Sankey, Shaw and Hicks Honored in Week Nine
May 23, 2006 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF) News Release
Omaha, NE - The United Indoor Football Week 9 Players of the Week have been selected and feature two players from the Central Division leaders, the Rock River Raptors and one from the undefeated, Sioux Falls Storm. Ben Sankey and Fernandez Shaw were honored as the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week from the Raptors and Adam Hicks from the Storm received the Special Teams award for the second time this season.
There is no shortage of top quality quarterbacks in the Rockford area, as Rik Richards team has featured two separate quarterbacks in back to back weeks receiving the offensive award. Ryan Aulenbacher was honored last week for the injured, Ben Sankey, and stepped in as a vital role in the Raptors (6-3) win over the Freedom. This past weekend, Sankey stepped back into the line-up and led his team to a victory as they beat the, then undefeated, Lexington Horsemen (7-1). Sankey threw for 136-yards and five touchdowns as he went for 15 of 28 passing. Sankey's level head play led his offense over one of the top defenses in the league and gave the Horsemen their first loss of the season. The Raptors will now look to win out the season in hopes for a few more Horsemen losses to receive a first round bye going into the play-offs. On the year, Sankey has thrown 224 passes and only had one intercepted all season! This is his first player of the week award in 2006.
Fernandez Shaw led the Raptors defense on Saturday, as he was honored with the Defensive Player of the Week. Shaw opened the game with back-to-back sacks on Eddie Eviston, arguably the best quarterback in the UIF this season. Shaw ended the night with six total tackles, three sacks and one interception that he returned 20-yards for a touchdown. On the season, Shaw has 22.5 total tackles and 8 sacks for a loss of 49-yards total. His eight sacks leads the UIF as he is averaging one a game on the season. Shaw and Sankey will take a bye week in Week 10 and then head back to Lexington in Week 11 for another re-match.
For the second time this season, Adam Hicks of the Sioux Falls Storm received Special Teams Player of the Week. Hicks helped lead the undefeated Storm (9-0) over the Sioux City Bandits (4-5) by hitting on 6 of 6 PAT's and also three of his four field goal attempts with his long being a 39-yarder near the end of the fourth quarter. On the season, Adam is second in field goals (12), first in field goal percentage (44.4%), and third in PAT percentage (84.2%) in the league. Hicks was named honored before in Week 6. The Storm take a bye week in Week 10 and then head to Omaha for Week 11 action.
Taking honorable mention awards were: Offense-Matt Kohn, Ohio Valley; Defense-Nate Fluit, Sioux Falls Storm, Brock Dodrill, Ohio Valley; and Special Team-James Cooper, Bloomington.
