Homestand Review... The Giants posted a 2-5 record during their seven-game homestand that concluded last Sunday. San Jose dropped four straight to the Lake Elsinore Storm to begin the homestand - the first time a Giants team had been swept in a four-game series at Municipal Stadium since 2011. San Jose then took two out of three games from the visiting Stockton Ports over the weekend. It was the Giants' first series win since April 20-22 when they swept the Inland Empire 66ers in a three-game set at Municipal Stadium.
Offensive Improvement... The Giants are batting .270 as a team and scoring 4.7 runs per game in May after hitting just .252 with 3.5 runs per contest during the month of April.
Slater Ranks Ninth In Hitting... Austin Slater brings a .320 batting average into tonight's game to rank ninth in the California League. Since beginning the season in a 5-for-28 slump (.179), Slater is batting at a .377 clip (26-for-69) spanning the last 17 games. Slater enjoyed an 11-game hitting streak from April 19 to May 7 - the longest hit streak by a Giants player this season. Last year, Slater led the Short-Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes with a .347 batting average.
Road Struggles... The Giants have lost nine out of their last 11 games away from Municipal Stadium and own a league- worst 4-10 road record this season. San Jose is batting .233 as a team with a 4.74 ERA on the road (.278, 3.04 at home).
Pitching Leaders... Three Giants starting pitchers - Nick Vander Tuig (6th, 2.22), Tyler Beede (7th, 2.41) and Chase Johnson (8th, 2.45) - rank among the top eight in the league in ERA. San Jose's team ERA of 3.77 is fourth in the league.
Bullpen Excels... The Giants bullpen boasts an outstanding ERA of 2.64 this season. San Jose's bullpen hasn't blown a save since the season opener (April 9 at Lancaster). The top three strikeout pitchers on the team are relievers: Jake Smith (29), Ian Gardeck (27) and Martin Agosta (26).
Trouble In The Field... The Giants have committed a league-high 43 errors this season, including 11 in the last six games. The 28 unearned runs allowed by San Jose this year are third-most in the league.
Lollis Returns... Outfielder Ryan Lollis returned to the Giants last weekend after a brief stint with Triple-A Sacramento. In nine games for the River Cats, Lollis batted .320 (8-for-25) with one home run and two RBI's. Lollis began this season in San Jose and owns a team-leading .362 batting average with one home run and four RBI's in 16 games.
Giants With RISP... The Giants are batting .240 this season with runners in scoring position - second-lowest in the California League. San Jose's .205 batting average with runners in scoring position and two outs is eighth in the league.
Close Calls... 12 out of San Jose's 21 losses this season have come by one or two runs. The Giants are just 2-12 overall in one or two-run games this year.
Double Plays... The Giants have grounded into 37 double plays this season - tops in all of Minor League Baseball. It's 12 more double plays than the next-closest team in the California League (Rancho Cucamonga, 25).
Today's Opponent: Modesto Nuts... The Modesto Nuts, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, own a 16-15 record this season. Modesto has won eight out of their last ten games. The Nuts are fourth in the league in batting average (.268) and sixth in ERA (4.15). This series marks the first meeting of the season between San Jose and Modesto.
