San Diego Spirit News Release
SAN DIEGO - Forward Shannon MacMillan, midfielder Julie Foudy and defender Joy Fawcett have been named to the 23-player U.S. Women's National Team training camp roster by head coach April Heinrichs in preparation for the July 21 exhibition vs. Norway at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. The match kicks off at 10 a.m. PT and will be broadcast live on ESPN.
Foudy, the national team captain, has made 210 appearances for the United States and has scored 39 goals. MacMillan is the leading scorer for the USA this year, pounding in 11 goals in nine games. No other U.S. player has more than one goal this year. MacMillan, who has recovered from a foot injury and will play against the Boston Breakers tomorrow at Torero Stadium, has 136 career caps and 46 goals. Fawcett, the all-time leading scorer among defenders in U.S. National Team history, has played 194 times for the USA while scoring 25 goals.
The trio will miss the Spirit's road match at New York on July 20 should they be named to Heinrich's 18-player roster for the match. MacMillan scored both goals against Norway in the last meeting between the two teams, a 3-2 U.S. loss at the Algarve Cup in Portugal on March 5, 2002.
The San Diego Spirit is a charter member of the WUSA and plays their home matches at the 7,035-seat Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego.
