San Diego Spirit to Meet Atlanta in Houston, Texas

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Spirit will play a preseason exhibition match in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday, March 26 against the Atlanta Beat. Kickoff at Rice University's Track & Soccer Stadium is at 5:00 p.m. PT. The complete six-game Spirit preseason exhibition schedule was released yesterday.

The match against Atlanta will come 10 days before the Spirit's season opener on April 5 and will feature a roster including Julie Foudy, Shannon MacMillan, Joy Fawcett, Jaime Pagliarulo and 2003 #1 draft pick Aly Wagner. Defender Amy Sauer and draft pick Susan Bush, both of whom played their youth club soccer for the Houston Challenge, will be returning to their native hometown for the game.

The Houston Women's Soccer Association (HWSA) is hosting the charity match to raise monies for the HWSA Scholarship and Field Development Funds.

"Houston Women's Soccer Association is excited to host another WUSA game in Houston, " said HWSA president and event organizer Jen Cooper. "It's great to get another opportunity to show the WUSA that Houston deserves a women's professional soccer team of its own."

The match represents the second time that the Spirit and Beat have met in the state of Texas for a pre-season game. On March 9, 2001, the Beat edged the Spirit, 3-2, before a crowd of over 3,000 fans in El Paso.

San Diego will conclude the two-game road trip with a match against Arizona State University on Saturday, March 29 in Tempe.

The San Diego Spirit is a charter member of the WUSA and plays their home matches at the 7,035-seat Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego. The Spirit kicks off their third season of action on April 5, against the Boston Breakers. Kickoff is 6 p.m. PT.
