San Diego Spirit News Release

SAN DIEGO - Defender Joy Fawcett, midfielders Aly Wagner and Julie Foudy and goalkeeper Jaime Pagliarulo have been named to the 23-player U.S. Women's National Team roster that will train for four days in Salt Lake City, Utah, in preparation to face Ireland on June 14 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in a match that will be televised live on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. MT / 6 p.m. PT.

All of the Spirit players will continue their quest to earn a spot on the U.S. 2003 Women's World Cup roster for the tournament that was recently moved to the United States.

For Pagliarulo, this will be her first call-up since last January when she trained with the U.S. team in San Diego. Off to a tremendous start to the 2003 WUSA season, Pagliarulo will get the chance to train with Briana Scurry of the Atlanta Beat and LaKeysia Beene of the San Jose CyberRays. The Hershey, Penn., product has three career caps with the U.S. Women's National Team, but was the starter for the U.S. Under-20 National Team for two years while in college at George Mason.

"I know that I am a prime example of how the WUSA has given players a platform to perform in order to be evaluated by the national team coaching staff," said Pagliarulo. "There are just some fantastic goalkeepers in this country and I know it's a long shot to make the World Cup Team, but I'm grateful for any opportunity I get to keep my foot in the door with the national team player pool."

U.S. head coach Heinrichs will chose 20 players from the 23 in training to suit up against Ireland, and should the Spirit players make that squad, they will miss the June 14 WUSA match at Philadelphia. Should they not make the roster for the match, they will be available to face the Charge that Saturday at Villanova University in a game that will be broadcast live on PAX TV at 1 p.m. PT.
