San Diego Spirit News Release

VETERAN CHRIS MARLOWE AND SOCKERS' LEGEND BRIAN QUINN NAMED AS NEW SPIRIT TELEVISION BROADCAST TEAM FOR 2002

SAN DIEGO – New and knowledgeable voices will grace the telecasts of San Diego Spirit home matches in 2002, as the club announced today that veteran sports play-by-play announcer Chris Marlowe and San Diego soccer icon Brian "The Mighty" Quinn will be the new Channel 4 San Diego television broadcast team. Under the new WUSA regional broadcast format, the Marlowe & Quinn team will only be seen on telecasts originating from Torero Stadium.

Marlowe, a veteran of four consecutive Olympic telecasts on NBC, is one of America's most versatile announcers. This past fall, Marlowe added San Diego State basketball to his resume, calling Aztec play-by-play for Channel 4 San Diego.

Other recent assignments include XFL football for UPN, NCAA college basketball on ESPN, Mountain West College Football on ESPN Plus, professional beach volleyball for FOX, and NCAA Championships in swimming, diving, gymnastics and volleyball for ESPN. Marlowe also covered the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and will be part of NBC's 2004 Olympic coverage in Athens, Greece.

In his 25-year announcing career, Marlowe has called an eclectic and vast array of sporting events including soccer, aerobics, baseball, boxing, cliff-diving, poker, skiing, track & field, water polo, wind surfing, and wrestling.

Marlowe played basketball and volleyball at San Diego State University and was the starting setter on SDSU's 1973 NCAA Championship volleyball team. His athletic career culminated as captain of the gold medal winning United States Olympic Volleyball team in 1984.

Quinn, a rookie this time in the broadcast booth, was an eight-time all-star midfielder in the Major Indoor Soccer League, where he won eight national indoor championships with the San Diego Sockers from 1983-‘91. Quinn also had a distinguished outdoor career in the old North American Soccer League, suiting up for three teams: the San Diego Sockers, Montreal Manic and Los Angeles Aztecs.

After becoming a U.S. citizen in April 1991, Quinn became a regular in the midfield of the U.S. National Team in their preparation for the 1994 World Cup. He finished his four-year U.S. career with 48 caps.

Quinn started his professional coaching career in 1995, with the San Diego Sockers of the Continental Indoor Soccer League, and then became the youngest coach in Major League Soccer history when he joined the San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) in June of 1997.

Allen Hopkins, a Fox Sports World play-by-play professional, will call two matches for Marlowe, who will be on other assignments.

The San Diego Spirit will kick off their second season on April 13 against the Carolina Courage. The Spirit will play their home matches at the renovated 7,035-seat Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego. Tickets for 2002 are now on sale.
