San Diego Spirit News Release
SAN DIEGO - San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Mark Zeigler captured the 2nd annual San Diego Spirit Media Day Shootout individual title, while the team representing the print media claimed the team championship at the media event held today at Torero Stadium.
Nineteen media outlets were represented by the contingent of 27 media members on a bright sunny day on the plush Torero Stadium field. The day featured lunch with the Spirit players, an unveiling of the renovated facilities at Torero Stadium, introduction of the coaching staff and players, and finally the popular "Media Shootout" event.
Zeigler, who was also kicking as a member of the print media team, squared off against XTRA Sports 690 radio morning show personality Scott Kaplan in the third and final round to decide both the individual and team titles. Kaplan, with his two-year old son in his arms, faced Spirit goalkeeper coach Tom Tate, but sailed his kick over the crossbar. Zeigler, who after conferring with Spirit players and without any kids in tow, kept his game plan of shooting to the left and beat Tate with his driving shot into the side netting, securing both the individual and first-time team championship for the print media. The final tally saw the print team with three goals, the TV/Radio and New Media teams with two goals each.
The event was held to preview the renovated Torero Stadium and the 2002 edition of the Spirit before Saturday's season opener against the Carolina Courage at 3:00 p.m.
