San Diego Spirit News Release
SAN DIEGO - The new San Diego Spirit Advisory Board was introduced at a charity luncheon on Monday, March 3, at the Prado at Balboa Park. The new board will be a part of the Pacific Women's Sports Foundation.
The luncheon featured keynote speaker Martha Burk, a leading women's advocate, speaking on the Augusta (GA) National Golf Club controversy. In addition, Spirit captain Julie Foudy discussed her recent involvement in Title IX issues.
The new San Diego Spirit Advisory Board is designed to continue the advancement of women's sports in San Diego, especially at the professional level.
San Diego sports, corporate and civic leaders will play a key role in the growth of the Board and women's sports. The Board's goals will be ever evolving, but will be focused on developing programs to assist young women in their pursuit of playing sports, and bringing together the women's sports & business communities to help further the progress of women's sports.
Establishing the strongest board possible is our top priority. We have invited a group of influential to be a part of an organization that will make a difference in the lives of all female athletes and women who want to work in the sports business in America's Finest City.
Proceeds from the charity luncheon benefited the Girls Understanding Their Strengths (G.U.T.S.) program sponsored by the PWSF. G.U.T.S. is an after-school curriculum to help girls redefine a sense of self and a sense of power to make positive choices and to encourage greater participation in sports and physical activity. G.U.T.S. provides real solutions for girls at-risk in our most under-served communities. The program focuses on physical activity and sports; healthy eating; positive self-image; role models; and self- expression. Girls learn teamwork, leadership skills, sportsmanship, confidence, and trust.
