San Diego Sockers' First Visit to DFW Since January 31, 2004
November 10, 2009 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
Texas Outlaws News Release
The last time the San Diego Sockers played indoor soccer in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area, they walked away with a loss. That was 5 years ago, a different league, Reunion Arena, and the end of a great era of Dallas Sidekicks soccer. This weekend the San Diego Sockers return as part of the PASL to face the Texas Outlaws and what looks to be the beginning of a new era of indoor soccer.
Some familiar faces are on the rosters of both squads. For the Texas Outlaws, Shaun David will make his first start with the Texas Outlaws and will be the only player for the Texas squad that played against the Sockers the last time they came to town. For the Sockers, Sean Bowers is the only rostered player that made that last visit to Dallas. It remains to be seen if he will make the trip this time.
San Diego played their home opener this last Saturday at Del Mar Arena in front of a crowd of 2,700 fans. Although just an exhibition game, the enthusiastic home crowd witnessed a victory against the Stars of Mexico team 9-5. The win marked the return of the ten-time championship Sockers team to San Diego.
The Sockers never trailed in its action-packed game against the Stars of Mexico. With the first and last goals of the game scored by Miguel "Chiky" Luna, the seven other Sockers points were scored by Paul Wright, Aaron Susi, Anthony Medina, Kraig Chiles, Dan Antoniuk, Scott Martin, and Tim Roty. Geared up in white, the Stars of Mexico players kept the game close, tying at 5-5 shortly after halftime. While the Stars of Mexico scoring stalled, the Sockers gained a four-point lead to secure the victory in the second half.
Stars of Mexico player, Luis Hernandez, was ejected from the game in the fourth period after getting tangled up with and allegedly kicking Sockers star Medina. With just over two-minutes remaining in the game, Stars of Mexico player, Guadalupe "El Lupillo" Castaneda injured his back while attempting to head the ball, and was escorted to the hospital in an ambulance.
