San Diego Spirit News Release
A 2-2 draw with the Boston Breakers last Saturday at Nickerson Field on a cold and blustery evening helped the Spirit finish the month of April with a 1-1-1 record. The month of April also provided Spirit fans with a look at some of the new and rising stars of the WUSA, including Chinese forward and WUSA leading scorer Zhang Ouying, former BYU standout forward Shauna Rohbock, first-round draft pick midfielder Lori Lindsey and second-round draft choice defender Amy Sauer.

SPIRIT NEWS:
FREQUENT FLIERS
The San Diego Spirit travel the second most of any team in league trailing the San Jose CyberRays by only a mere 1,000 miles. The Spirit will travel over 46,000 miles for their 10 road trips (11 games) in 2002.
NEWCOMERS MAKING AN IMPACT
In only three games, the Spirit has already scored nine goals and the new players have scored six of those. The team is well ahead of last year's goal scoring pace in which the team scored 29 goals for the year, and only two after the first three games. "It is huge what our new players are bringing to the team, Zhang has three goals, Shauna has two and our first-round draft pick Lori Lindsey has one, " said Spirit head coach Carlos Juarez. "I would say that scoring six of our nine goals is a big impact on our team."
TRYING THEIR FOOT AT ANOTHER SPORT
Several members of the Spirit will participate in a halftime field goal kicking contest at the Arena Football 2 League game between the San Diego Riptide and the Louisville Fire on Saturday night at the San Diego Sports Arena. The contest will take place after the standard Riptide halftime promotion of a fan kicking a field goal for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
AN ALARMING ROAD TRIP
During the recent road trip to Boston, the team had an alarming experience. On Friday afternoon after the team had returned from lunch, an alarm sounded throughout the hotel, advising all guests to evacuate the building via the stairs. Players and team staff gathered in the hallway of the 10th floor and for the most part began to calmly proceed down the 10 flights of stairs to get to the hotel lobby and out into the brisk and windy Boston afternoon. After 20 minutes, the hotel management and the Boston Fire Department gave the okay to return to the rooms. Apparently, the smoke alarm in the adjoining Applebee's Restaurant sparked the evacuation. "I wasn't really nervous, having teammates around was calming, but I wanted to know what the emergency was," said Spirit defender Amy Sauer. "During a time like that many different things go through your mind, one of which was that Rhi (Rhiannon Tanaka) and I had just settled in and paid for a movie and if we were going to miss the start of it."

QUOTE SHEET:
Carlos Juarez on Shauna Rohbock...
"We must remember that she is a soccer player first, a person who also bobsleds. She is on the team because she is a soccer player and she scores goals. I may look like a genius by having her on the team, but she is the one who is scoring the goals."

SPIRIT GAINS FIRST POINT WITH A 0-0 TIE IN NEW YORK
April 29, 2001 - The San Diego Spirit earn the first point by drawing with the New York Power, 0-0, at the Mitchel Athletic Complex. Goalkeeper Jaime Pagliarulo gets her first career start and blanks the high-powered New York offense.
PERSONALITY PLUS:
JAIME PAGLIARULO:
Jaime Pagliarulo better known as "Pags," is a goalkeeper and a teacher. Pagliarulo, who earned the reputation for making big saves with a dramatic flair, was very settled as a physical education teacher at Louise Archer Elementary School in Fairfax County, Virginia before getting the call to the WUSA. After being drafted by the Spirit, she packed her bags, headed West, and since then the East Coast girl has flourished in the Southern California sun. Pagliarulo used her steady play to help make her a rising star on the national landscape. She has parlayed her Spirit performances into appearances with the U.S. National Team on several occasions. After her professional soccer career, she plans on returning to her other love, teaching young children.
