VILLANOVA, PA (April 29, 2002) - The Philadelphia Charge, in cooperation with Villanova University and Radnor Township, announced Monday that the team has implemented new security measures to ensure the safety of all fans this season at Villanova Stadium.

"Since we have not taken the field since the September 11 tragedies, we felt it was time to evaluate our security procedures from the 2001 season and make any necessary changes that would enhance the safety of our fans," General Manager Tim Murphy said. "It is important to note however, that none of these changes will disrupt the fan-friendly atmosphere we had last season and anticipate again this year."

The major change to the security procedures is that every bag will have to go through a thorough check before entering the stadium.

"We are not discouraging people from bringing in any items they may need for comfort, such as blankets, seat cushions or whatever," Murphy said. "However, we want to make sure that everyone feels safe and come to Charge games to enjoy the game and watch the team win."

There will also be an increase in security personnel. Event One Security has been hired and the Villanova Campus Police will also be on hand to assist in the efforts.

"We are confident that anyone who attends a Charge soccer game will have a great time and want to come back," Murphy said. "We just want to make sure that everyone feels safe."

The Charge open their 2002 home schedule this Saturday, May 4 against the Boston Breakers starting at 7 pm. The first 2,000 kids 14 and under to the game will receive a limited edition Lorrie Fair Bobblehead Doll courtesy of Got Milk?.
