San Diego Feels Aftershock in Openers

San Diego, CA – The San Diego SunFire began the 2003 WPFL season on Sunday afternoon on the road with an 18-6 loss to the improved Long Beach Aftershock at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.

San Diego (0-1) kept the Aftershock (1-0), who added key players from the disbanded Los Angeles Laser in the offseason to making them a serious contender for the WPFL championship, in check until late in the third quarter when Long Beach took advantage of two SunFire turnovers to score 12 unanswered points. The Aftershock scored on a four-yard pass from Mary Margaret Montgomery to Emily Delelio and then on a Kelly Teegarin reverse run of 10 yards for the two touchdowns. Both PAT's were unsuccessful.

The SunFire opened the scoring in the second quarter on a two-yard run by Railene Ritzberg; the PAT was blocked. Long Beach tied the game with a two-yard touchdown run of its own later in the quarter.San Diego kicks off the home portion of their inaugural WPFL season on Saturday, August 16th, 7:05 pm at La Jolla High in a rematch against the Long Beach Aftershock.

The San Diego SunFire is a member of the 17-team Women's Professional Football League. The SunFire's 2003 regular season consists of a 10-game schedule with San Diego playing its home games at La Jolla High School. Last season, the SunFire finished its second professional campaign at 9-1, the best regular season record in the disbanded American Football Women's League and Silver Cup Winners of the AFWL.
