San Diego Dominates League Awards
Published on March 9, 2011 under Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release
The San Diego Sockers dominated the PASL-Pro year-end awards garnering three First Team, two Second Team player slots as well as Most Valuable Player and Coach of the Year.
Kraig Chiles was named MVP and All-League First Team after leading the Sockers in scoring with a league-high 33 goals. His 10 power play goals also led the league and he was tied for second with four game-winning goals. Chiles also added 12 assists for 45 total points. He finished second last year in MVP voting to Jeff Hughes, who was this year's runner-up.
Sockers coach Phil Salvagio, who like Chiles was also a runner-up last year, broke through to win the Coach of the Year award. Salvagio led the Sockers to a 14-2 record. In two seasons under Salvagio the Sockers are 27-5 in the regular season and won the North American Championship and the US Open trophy last year. The Sockers are still in contention to repeat both titles.
Joining Chiles on the First Team are fellow Sockers Dan Antoniuk (for the second straight year) and Ze Roberto. On the Second Team are Diego Rovira and Riley Swift.
The Cincinnati Kings were next in line with three All-League players. Hughes and Craig Salvati each made their second appearance on the First Team and Jeff Henderson landed on the Second Team, narrowly trailing Ze Roberto in the voting.
Rounding out the First Team was the league's co-leading scorer Eduardo Velez of Revolucion Tijuana.
The Second Team featured Greg Howes of Tacoma, who tied with Velez with 52 points this season, Detroit's Costea Decu, and California's Antonio Sutton.
Voting was conducted last month. Each team and members of the league office were allowed to cast one ballot each for the First Team, Second Team, MVP, and Coach of the Year.
