San Diego Sunfire News Release
SAN DIEGO (AFWL TICKER) - With a year of Women's football under their belts, San Diego and Los Angeles are even more hungry with both just missing the playoffs in 2001. And, just like last year - the SunFire and the Lasers meet in game two of the season. Both with a shutout victory and looking to make a statement. The two will go head to head Saturday night in Los Angeles at Harbor College. The SunFire (1-0) opened it's home season at Patrick Henry Stadium against a San Francisco (0-1) team that was experienced but undermanned. Melissa Simmons ran for two touchdowns and Melissa Gallegos threw for another as the San Diego SunFire defeated the San Francisco Tsunami 27-0.
The SunFire scored on its second possession when Gallegos connected with Robin Leafblad for a 54-yard scoring pass. San Diego went ahead 20-0 in the second quarter when defensive tackle Jody Taylor forced a fumble that Carol Jones recovered in San Francisco's end zone. The SunFire's Defense held the Tsunami to just 12 yards in the first. The game was called at half-time because of injuries sustained by San Francisco's 15 available players. 27 to zero the final.
Los Angeles opened the season on the road in Arizona. Their balanced offense attacked the Titans on the ground and in the air. They scored 66 points with the defense holding the Titans scoreless. The Lasers fast paced offense will meet a hard-hitting San Diego defense on Saturday night at Harbor College in Wilmington.
The winner of this match up will move to the top of the league standings.
SunFire @ Los Angeles Harbor College - 1111 Figueroa Pl. Wilmington, CA - 7 pm game time.
