Tampa Bay Storm News Release

TAMPA, FL -- Tampa Bay Storm wide receiver/linebacker Lawrence Samuels has been named the Arena Football League's Ironman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Samuels earned co-Ironman of the Game honors last Sunday in helping the Storm pick up a 67-64 victory over the Dallas Desperados and clinch a first-round playoff bye. In the contest Samuels picked off a Dallas pass and returned it five yards for a touchdown to put the Storm ahead 27-14. He later scored on an 11-yard touchdown reception.

Defensively, Samuels had three tackles and a fumble recovery to go along with his interception. He also made a fourth down tackle on a key Storm goal line stand in the fourth quarter and recovered an onside kick that allowed the Storm to run the remaining time off of the game clock and secure their 11th victory of the season.

This is the fifth AFL weekly award won by Samuels, who is in his tenth AFL season. It is also the second consecutive week a Storm player has been named Ironman of the Week. Last week lineman BJ Cohen received the honor.

An Ironman of the Year candidate, Samuels is having his best-ever campaign, topping single season career highs in numerous categories. This year Samuels in second on the Storm in receptions (71), receiving yards (951), receiving touchdowns (17), scoring (122 points), all-purpose yards (999), fumble returns (3), and sacks (3.5). He is also third in interceptions (4) and fourth in total tackles (30.5). He has set single season career highs in receptions, receiving yards, scoring, interceptions, fumble returns, all-purpose yards, and sacks. Additionally, he needs three receiving scores and 12 tackles to break his career single season records in those categories.

Samuels and the Storm (11-3) return to action this Sunday afternoon in a crucial contest home against the San Jose Sabercats (10-4). The Storm own the league's best record and can lock up the top seed in the playoffs and home field advantage throughout with wins in their final two regular season contests.

Sunday's game will be televised live on NBC Sports at 3:00 pm. It can also be heard in the Tampa Bay area on 620-AM WDAE. Tickets are available at any TicketMaster location or by calling the St. Pete Times Box Office at (813) 301-6600.
