Connecticut Whale News Release

Brooklyn, NY - Sam Donovan, the fifth overall selection in the 2017 NWHL Draft, has been signed by the Connecticut Whale for the remainder of the NWHL season. The leading scorer this season for Brown University, Donovan will practice with the Whale this week and is eligible to make her NWHL debut in the team's next game, on Saturday night in Boston.

"I love that the NWHL is a highly-competitive league and aims to expand women's hockey, and it's an honor and a privilege to be a part of something so special," said Donovan. "About a week ago I played in my last game as a collegiate athlete at Brown and I already miss playing, so it will be so exciting to get back on the ice again as a professional athlete. It truly is a privilege to have the opportunity to skate with extremely talented hockey players. The Whale coaches and staff have already been so welcoming, and I look forward to meeting the rest of the team."

Donovan, a 5-2 forward out of Minnesota who was a finalist for the state's Ms. Hockey Award in 2014, played at Brown for four seasons between 2014-2018 and was 36-32-68 in 116 games. This season, she was named Honorable Mention All-Ivy League. At the school, her studies were concentrated on Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations.

"Sam is a player we have felt very strongly about for a long period of time, and are excited to welcome her to the Pod," said Whale head coach Ryan Equale. "She possesses the speed, scoring touch and hockey IQ that we look for in our players. Our expectations of Sam are simple: we want her to start with our team as she left off with Brown University. Sam has a high level of compete and she is a solid defensive forward that can score. We look forward to watching Sam take the next step in her development as a player on Saturday when she puts on the Whale Jersey for the first time."
