Harrisburg Stampede News Release

HARRISBURG, PA (July 24, 2014) - For the 3rd year in a row, Strawberry Square and Harristown have partnered with The Salvation Army Harrisburg Capital City Region to host a "'Christmas in July" event from Monday, July 21, 2014 through Friday, July 25, 2014. The event will conclude tomorrow, and Salvation Army staff and volunteers will be joined by Blitz, mascot for the Harrisburg Stampede, to help encourage donations and support for local kids. The Salvation Army display table will be positioned in the Atrium of Strawberry Square between 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. tomorrow and shoppers will have the opportunity to purchase basic school supplies to fill fifty (50) backpacks donated by Strawberry Square for local children in need. Donations of between $1.00 and $5.00 will be used to provide specific school supplies to fill a backpack, which will be distributed by The Salvation Army.

Needs of area children and families continue to grow. Last year The Salvation Army Harrisburg provided new toys and clothing for over 3,000 area children during the Christmas holidays, with 2,246 unduplicated children participating in Salvation youth programs in the Harrisburg area. "Over the past year, we more than doubled the number of children served through our youth programs," says Major John Griner, Corps Officer, Salvation Army Harrisburg, "And if a child needs our help at Christmas, chances are they will need our help at other times of the year, such as back-to-school season when we want to help get them off to a great start for a successful year. We appreciate the help and support of friends like Strawberry Square and Harrisburg Stampede who partner with us to help kids."

Throughout the year, more than more than 2,000 local children will participate in Salvation Army Harrisburg youth programs, including afterschool, Summer Youth Enrichment and Bridging the Gap intervention and prevention program with a goal of providing local children with the opportunities and tools they need to succeed.
