Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed defenseman Gary Gladue and forward Brady Leavold for the 2009-10 season.
Gladue will begin his third season with the Salmon Kings this fall, after recording 20 assists in 55 games last year while accumulating 12 minutes in penalties. During the 2009 Kelly Cup Playoffs the Chetwynd, BC native collected five assists in eight games.
In his two year career with Victoria, the blueliner has played in 126 games, scoring 62 points (5g-57a) to go along with 60 minutes in penalties. During his tenure in the BC capital, Gladue has also participated in 16 Kelly Cup Playoff games notching six assists and six minutes in penalties.
"Gary helps to bring continuity to our locker room," General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison said. "He is a swift skating defenseman who moves the puck very well."
The 25-year-old started his professional career with the ECHL's Columbia Inferno in 2005-06 where he scored 20 points (3g-17a) in 64 games played. The following year Gladue played 69 games for the Long Beach Ice Dogs notching two goals and adding 17 helpers for 19 points. In 259 professional games Gladue has scored 101 points (10g-91a) with 136 minutes in penalties.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Galdue participated in the Vancouver Canucks Prospects Game versus the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in 2003, earning three points in the 5-3 win.
Prior to turning pro, Gladue played six seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Spokane Chiefs, Calgary Hitmen, and Prince George Cougars. In 307 games in the WHL, Gladue tallied 111 points (24 goals, 87 assists). In both seasons with the Chiefs, he led the team's defensemen in assists.
Brady Leavold will again suit up with the Salmon Kings for his sophmore season. In 31 games during the 2008-09 season he scored 14 points (10g-4a) while adding 49 minutes in penalties. Leavold also played in seven Kelly Cup Playoff games this past spring notching four points (1g-3a) with eight minutes in penalties.
"Brady is a gritty player who contributes on the offense end of ice," Morrison said. "He also plays the game with a physical edge."
The 5-11, 190lb Leavold was under contract last season with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. Leavold began the season in Norfolk participating in four games adding two minutes in penalties before being assigned to Victoria for the remainder of the season.
For his professional career the Port Coquitlam, B.C. native has played in 38 career professional games scoring 12 goals and adding four assists for 16 points while serving 53 minutes in penalties.
The 21-year-old finished his WHL career playing 200 games for two teams (Kelowna and Swift Current) while adding 47 goals and 73 assists for 120 points. He was assessed 390 minutes in penalties over that span. In 13 career playoff games he accrued 10 points (8g-2a).
Leavold also spent part of the 2006-07 season with the Burnaby Express (BCHL) playing in 24 games and scoring seven goals and gaining 15 assists.
