Saints To Build Stadium...For Charity

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints are the latest Twin Cities franchise with plans to construct a ballpark. The Saints blueprints, however, are slightly different.

Eight representatives from the St. Paul Saints will participate in the First Annual Bubba Gump Shrimp Company Re-Building Block Party, Saturday, February 3 at the Mall of America. Each team has been assigned the task of creating a structure that best represents its business.

The Saints are among nine organizations participating in the charity event. Proceeds will benefit Rebuilding Together Twin Cities.

"We have very detailed plans," said Derek Sharrer, Saints executive vice president and general manager. "Our new ballpark will have a level playing surface, plenty of luxury boxes, and a great view of both Barnes and Noble and the Park at MOA."

Construction of the ballpark will commence at 11 a.m. in the rotunda of the mall. The entire ballpark will be completed in less than three hours and will be built entirely of Mega® Bloks.

"Bubba Gump Shrimp Company has not only provided us the space to build the facility and the tools necessary to complete the job, but they're even throwing in a delicious lunch," Sharrer said. "It was an offer that we couldn't turn down."

While local facilities have received honors for their outstanding construction (i.e. Xcel Energy Center was recently named by Sports Illustrated as Best NHL Arena), the Saints will be competing for their own prizes in categories such as: Most Creative, Best Use of Props, Best Use of Color and Forrest Gump's Favorite (Best in Show).

"At this point, we're not concerned about the accolades," Sharrer said. "We have three hours to build a stadium. If we can build it and sell a naming rights sponsorship all while raising money for charity, it'll be a great day for everyone."

The ballpark is scheduled to be dismantled Sunday, February 4, as Bubba Gump was only able to reserve the rotunda for one day.
