Saint John Mill Rats Update

August 29, 2011 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Saint John Riptide News Release

We are so excited about the up and coming inaugural season in the new National Basketball League of Canada! This is going to bring tremendous entertainment, highly quality basketball, and benefits to our City. We are humbled to have had a role in helping this come to fruition.

Just think of the new rivalries that will be create with Moncton, P.E.I., and teams in Ontario (London and Oshawa). And we are looking forward to continuing to compete against our existing rivals to the East - the Halifax Rainmen, and to the West - the Quebec Kebs!

We have amazing coaches in this League. Our own NBA World Champion, Jaren Jackson, has returned to the fold and will be once again patrolling the sidelines for the Mill Rats. Michael Ray Richardson, a former NBA All Star and coach of the Lawton-Fort Sill squad that won four straight championships, is the new hire of the London Lighting NBL Canada team.

Former Vermont Frost Heaves coach is now leading the soon-to-be-named PEI NBL Canada squad. Rob Spon, the 2011 PBL Coach of the Year, has re-joined the Quebec Kebs. Another former NBA player, Mark Strickland, is now the Head Coach of the Oshawa Power NBL Canada team. And Halifax reached into Europe and secured Josep "Pep" Claros Canals, an experienced and succesful overseas coach for many year.

We truly appreciate the support of our Corporate Partners, our Season Ticket Holders, the City, the Minor Basketball Associations, and all of our fans. It's going to be a memorable season!

Sincerely, Ian McCarthy President & General Manager Saint John Mill Rats

NBL CANADA 2011 Draft

Sunday August 21st was a historic evening for basketball fans in Canada! It was the night of the first ever NBL Canada Draft, which was broadcast live from the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

The Draft followed a two-day combine in which roughly 200 aspiring players participated in the NBL Pre-Draft Combine with their hopes of making an NBL Canada team.

The Mill Rats drafted the the first Canadian player taken, 6'4 guard Jerome Brown from Toronto with the 5th pick. With the 12th pick they selected 5'11 point guard Sherton Sanderson, the star of the Dare to Dream commericals. And with the 19th pick, Saint John selected 6'5 veteran Kevin Massiah.

We look forward to these young men arriving in Saint John for training camp!
