Saginaw Sting News Release

With over 3,000 fans in atten- dance, the Saginaw Sting claimed the first victory of the UIFL's inaugural season. The Dow Event Center witnessed UIFL history as the Sting de- feated the Eastern Kentucky Drillers 49-44.

A very early touchdown by Eastern Kentucky didn't dis- courage the Sting. On the opening kickoff, the Drillers went the distance of the field for a touchdown. The Sting answered with touchdowns on their next two drives. Im- provement built throughout the game.

Sting quarterback, Tommy Jones had a good outing. He completed 41 of his 50 at- tempts, accumulating 278 yards for the game. Jones passed for five touchdowns. Chuck Dowdell, out of Saginaw Valley State Univer-

sity, and Yvens Louis both had a pair of touchdowns while LaVaughn Macon added an- other.

Eastern Kentucky quarterback, Allan Holland also tallied five touchdowns. On the night, he had 176 yards off of 26 com- pletions.

Experience from Saginaw's defensive end Mike McFadden helped the defense withhold a final surge from the Drillers. He kept pressure on the op- posing quarterback, and in the fourth quarter recorded a safety. McFadden is a gradu- ate from Grand Valley State University where he won three national championships with the Lakers. Mike was the offi- cial S.A.W. Construction Player of the Week.

In total, the game featured five lead changes. James Skodak

of the Saginaw Sting had two interceptions in the game. He returned his second intercep- tion, which came late in the fourth quarter, for a 21-yard touchdown. This key intercep- tion closed out the game for the Sting as they now led by 11.

The Drillers scored one final touchdown within a minute to go. A failed on- side kick attempt by East- ern Kentucky ended any chance at a comeback.

The sting are back in action Friday, February 25, 2011 against the Johnstown Generals. Don't forget about the Draper Tailgate before the 7:30 kick-off. See you back at the Dow.
