Canton Cougars News Release

SAGINAW, MI - The Saginaw Sting and Canton Cougars entertained a crowd of a little under 2000 people in the Dow Event Center on Friday night, with the Sting hanging on for dear life at the end to earn a 62-61 victory. The Sting move to 6-2 on the season while Canton falls to 1-7. A Jared Tomas missed extra point with 6.1 seconds remaining proved to be the difference as the Cougars scored 40 second half points to try and spoil the Sting victory.

Saginaw was leading in the game by 22 points and one time and up 21 early in the fourth quarter. But Oklahoma native Ryan Morrow started to ignite the Cougars offense by completing 17of 21 passes in the fourth quarter alone, for 156 yards and five touchdowns. Morrow's last pass to Tim Smith brought the Cougars to within one point and after the missed PAT Jared Thomas and the Cougars executed a perfect onside kick and the Cougars received two final shots at the enzone, only to have both passes fall incomplete, giving Saginaw the one point victory.

The game offered over 600 total yards, 123 points and six turnovers. The defenses from Saginaw and Canton did show up but were only effective on certain parts of the game. Quarterbacks Tommy Jones finished 21 of 35 for 234 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Canton's Ryan Morrow ended up 31-44 for 271 yards seven touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Sting are now 6-2 and remain a half game behind the Northern Kentucky River Monsters. Next Saturday night Saginaw travels to Northern Kentucky for a "showdown" in which the entire UIFL has been waiting for. The River Monsters are led by former University of Kentucky star Jared Lorenzen who is leading the UIFL in many of the quarterback statistics, with Saginaw's Tommy Jones in a close second. Saginaw's LaVaughn Macon leads the UIFL in reception an aver yards per catch. The Sting will return home on April 29, for a final match up with the Johnstown Generals.

The Cougars play host to the Huntington Hammer next Saturday April 23rd at the Canton Civic Center. Tickets start at just $7.00. Doors open at 6:30pm, and kickoff begins at 7:30pm. For more information visit www.cantoncougars.com or call the Cougars office at 330-588-8000.
