SaberCats QB Mark Grieb Returns

SAN JOSE - The San Jose SaberCats today announced the return of three-time ArenaBowl Champion QB Mark Grieb. Per team policy, terms were not disclosed.

"We couldn't be more excited about bringing Mark back," said Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He has been a leader for our franchise for a decade, bringing three ArenaBowl championships to the SaberCats organization. Mark is one of the keys to bringing a fourth title to the city of San Jose and will play a huge role for us in 2011."

Grieb, (6-3, 215) will be returning for his 11th season with the team. A two-time ArenaBowl Most Valuable Player, Grieb holds a 95-34 career regular season record as a starter and is one of the most accomplished signal callers in AFL history. He is the highest rated quarterback (123.2) and most accurate quarterback (67.0%) in league history (minimum 100 games), currently ranking in the top five in career passing yards (36,846) and touchdown passes (715). In 2008, he became the only quarterback in league history to throw for over 4,000 yards in five consecutive seasons, throwing for 100 touchdown passes in 2007 and 2008.

A three-time All-AFL selection and 2002 Offensive Player of the Year, Grieb has the highest postseason quarterback rating (123.9) and completion percentage (68.0) of all-time and ranks second in AFL history with 5,037 passing yards and 112 touchdowns passes (minimum 15 games).

"I'm happy about coming back to the SaberCats for another season," said Grieb. "I'm looking forward to picking up where we left off in 2008 and am excited about the team Coach Arbet has put together since the SaberCats announced their return this offseason."

A 13-year veteran of the AFL, Grieb joined the SaberCats after being traded from the Buffalo Destroyers on March 11, 1999. Prior to his time with the Destroyers, he played for the Anaheim Piranhas in 1997. Grieb also served a stint with the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe in 1998 and the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL in 2001.

Grieb played collegiately at UC-Davis where he was a three year starter for the Aggies, finishing in the top 10 in six different offensive categories. His final year at UC-Davis, he threw for a then-school record 3,230 yards and 25 touchdowns. Grieb is a graduate of Oak Grove High School in San Jose.

The ArenaBowl XVI, XVIII and XXI champion, San Jose SaberCats, return to the Arena Football League for their 15th season starting in 2011.
