
SaberCats Add Veteran All-Arena WR Huey Whittaker

SAN JOSE, CA - The SaberCats today announced two-time All-Arena selection WR Huey Whittaker has joined San Jose for the 2012 season.
"Huey Whittaker has been productive in the AFL for a number of seasons now," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He's earned All-Arena recognition and he is the sort of big, strong and physical receiver we are looking to add to our team in 2012."
Whittaker (6-5, 225, South Florida) has played five seasons in the AFL, totaling 401 receptions for 4,654 yards and 98 touchdowns in 50 regular season games. An ArenaBowl champion with the Spokane Shock in 2010, he caught 32 receptions for 347 yards and 12 touchdowns in four postseason contests. He also earned Ironman of the Game for his efforts in ArenaBowl XVIII. Whittaker has played for the Tampa Bay Storm (2006, 2011), Utah Blaze (2007-08) and the Spokane Shock (2011).
Over his past three seasons in the AFL, Whittaker has been one of the most consistent players at his position, averaging
132 catches for 1,533 yards and 32 touchdowns. As a member of the Utah Blaze in 2008, Whittaker was named first-team All-Arena before posting his best season with the Spokane Shock notching 144 receptions for 1,653 yards and 37 touchdowns, earning him second-team All-Arena in the process.
Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2004, he has spent time with numerous NFL teams including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2004), Jacksonville Jaguars (2004-05) and the New York Jets (2009). Whittaker has also served time in the United Football League with the Florida Tuskers (2010) and the Virginia Destroyers (2011).
He played wide receiver at the University of South Florida from 2001-03, starting in 21 games for the Bulls and hauled in 117 receptions for 1,447 yards and seven touchdowns. Whittaker transferred to South Florida from Hudson Valley (NY) Community College in 1999.
A native of Hernando County, FL, Whittaker attended Springstead (FL) HS, where he earned all-state honors as a junior and senior.
The SaberCats roster now stands at 28 players with seven returning from 2011.
