Rush Fall Short in Wild One Versus Cutthroats

(Rapid City, SD) - Wednesday night, the Rapid City Rush clashed against the rival Denver Cutthroats in the first tilt of a four game series. Both teams combined for nine goals, tying a Rush season high, in a game that featured three lead changes, ending with a 5-4 Cutthroats victory. The Cutthroats hit the ice firing, notching the opening goal just 19 seconds into the first frame off a goal from Brad Smyth, extending his league-leading point streak to sixteen games. Markus Lauridsen would keep it going for the Cutthroats scoring with the man advantage at 13:08, doubling the lead.

The second period was dominated by the Rush offense, out-shooting the Cutthroats 19-4. Justin Faryna snuck a shot off the post, one game after netting his first professional goal. Jordan Baker slammed home a rebound goal while on the powerplay, tying the game for the Rush midway through the stanza. As the middle period drew to a close, veteran forward Jarrett Konkle tallied his team leading fourteenth goal of the season, giving the Rush a 3-2 lead with just four seconds left.

The Cutthroats responded in the final frame with two goals less than a minute apart by Markus Lauridsen at 7:38 and AJ Gale at 8:32 to reclaim the lead. At the 11:40 mark, Jesse Shultz kept the Rush in it, snapping home a shot to make it 4-4, his first goal back in a Rush uniform. Denver's Chris Greene responded just one minute later, lifting the Cutthroats to the 5-4 victory.

Rapid City ended the night 3-for-8 on the powerplay, marking the first time this season that the Rush potted three powerplay tallies in a single game. The swuad also set a season high with 43 shots on net.
