Runners Split With Brahmas
February 21, 2015 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Topeka Pilots News Release
The Runners traveled to Texas with a three point lead over the Brahmas for supremacy in the South and left with the same margin following a 2-1 win and a 6-2 loss. The team returns to Topeka after a 4-2-1 road trip.
Game one saw Lone Star charge ahead in the first on a Oskar Andren score at 13:40. Topeka responded moments later when Tyler Irvine, assisted by Ryan Polin and Dominic Lutz, knotted the contest at one heading into the second. Following a Hayden Hanson boarding call at 4:24 of the middle frame, Irvine struck again, thrusting the Runners into the lead on the power play (assisted by Polin). Though Topeka was out shot 31-19 by Lone Star, and 14-8 in the third period, the Runners made the one-goal lead stand thanks in part to an exceptional game by in net by Drew Vogler who stopped 30 of 31 shots for his 13th win of the season.
Saturday night was less successful for the Runners. Each team traded goals in the first, Lone Star with the first tally countered by Mike Gornall on another power play goal to tie the game. Then the wheels fell off for Topeka in the second period. The Brahmas pounced for two goals in less than a minute to open the frame and a third to close it as NAHL scoring leader Sebastian Vidmar (two goals) made the Runners pay for sloppy puck handling. Lone Star claimed two more points in the third to run away with the game 6-2.
After South Division Head Coach Scott Langer and company wrap up the Top Prospects Tournament this week, the Runners will return to Topeka after their month-long absence to face Wichita Falls for another possible playoff preview on Friday and Saturday night. The RoadRunners Coach's Show will be at Blind Tiger on Tuesday night at 6pm, Saturday's game is Hockey & Heels Night at Landon Arena. Register to be a part of the festivities by calling 785-286-PUCK or visiting the RoadRunners offices at 1800 SW Exoduster Blvd.
