Topeka Pilots News Release
The Topeka RoadRunners have equaled their longest win streak of the year, winning their third consecutive gameSaturday to cap a weekend sweep in Springfield.
The first period of play on Friday was controlled by the Jr. Blues, as they outshot Topeka 13-8 and scored the period's only goal. In the second period, the 'Runners came out fired up, launching 17 shots on goal and scoring 5 unanswered goals, a single period season high. The first was Marcus Russell at 6:26, then Matt Jennings at 9:58. Quinn Preston made it 3-1, and then at 13:43 it was Dominic Lutz piling it on. Jennings made it 5-1 in the final minute of the period, and captain Cam Strong racked up three assists in the period. Springfield attempted a comeback in the third, but a power play goal by Ryan O'Connor provided the final 6-3 margin. Juho Niku looked solid with a 36-save win in goal.
On Saturday, Topeka set out to put an end to a couple of streaks. The previous five weeks had all ended in splits, with the 'Runners unable to close out a sweep since Oct 2 and 3 at home against Lone Star. And while the 'Runners were a perfect 4-0-0 on Fridays against Springfield, they were also a disappointing 0-3-0 on Saturdaynights. Marcus Russell got the party started for Topeka for the second night in a row, this one at 17:05. The explosive Carlos Fornaris assisted on the goal, then assisted on an insurance goal by Luka Maver at 5:35 of the second. Midway through the second, Fornaris grew the lead to 3-0 before Springfield finally got on the board. Topeka tightened the reins in the third, and helped Tyler Johnson notch his 10th win of the year.
Topeka (13-11-0) will return to Landon Arena this weekend for Parents Weekend to face Springfield (13-6-2) for the fifth time in seven weeks.
