'Runners Blanked in 1-0 Loss
February 12, 2011 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Topeka Pilots News Release
In the second game of a three game set in arid, mile high Rio Rancho, NM, it was the hometown Mustangs who got the upper hand, riding a first period goal all the way to a 1-0 win on Friday night.
The games only goal came at 8:53 of the first period when New Mexico's Brad Wilhelm made a nice move through the high slot and shot low blocker side against the grain to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. Topeka outshot New Mexico 8-7 in the first, and in the second period, outshot them again 15-6 but failed to convert on three power plays. The 'Runners generated chances but Mustangs netminder Marco Wieser had an answer for each of them.
In the final frame, again Topeka outshot their hosts 10-6 but fired wide on a couple of good chances, hit a crossbar, and Wieser handled the rest as Topeka was held scoreless for the first time since Oct.23 in a 3-0 loss to St. Louis. Rasmus Tirronen stopped 18 shots but Wieser stopped all 33 he faced as the Mustangs topped Topeka for the first time in 6 games.
Topeka (32-9-3) and New Mexico (13-29-3) meet for the final time this season Saturday night at the Santa Ana Star Center. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm MST.
