Abilene Ruff Riders News Release

ABILENE, TX. : The Abilene Ruff Riders dropped a close ball game to the Corpus Christi Hammerheads on Saturday, May 30 by the score of 27-22 from the Taylor County Expo Center. Before the game, the big story was the health of QB Quincy Carter and that he was not going to play in the game due to a back injury suffered back on May 23 when the Ruff Riders defeated El Paso. David Bowie got the start and he got Abilene on the board first by hooking up with WR Fred Howze for a 19-yard touchdown pass making it 7-0.

In the second quarter, the Corpus Christi Hammerheads took advantage of an Abilene turnover as QB Cory Miles found WR Austin Willis for a 20-yard touchdown pass. The Ruff Riders were able to block the extra point attempt making it a 7-6 ball game. Abilene extended their lead as K Nick Pertuit nailed a 44-yard field goal to make it 10-6. Corpus would put together a solid drive following the field goal. RB Redford Borel registered a 25-yard run to move the ball down to the Abilene 17 yard line. Borel would punch it in on fourth and goal to give the Hammerheads their first lead of the ball game at 13-10 heading into halftime.

Abilene began the second half just as the first when David Bowie found WR Juan Reese for a 11-yard touchdown pass giving Abilene the lead at 16-13. It would be the Ruff Riders only score of the third quarter. Abilene could not find the end-zone to start the fourth quarter and therefore had to rely on another Pertuit field goal to make it 19-13. Corpus quickly tied the game on the ensuing drive when Cory Miles found WR Toric Goins for a 12-yard touchdown pass making it 19 all.

The Ruff Riders continued to tack on field goals as David Bowie could not complete a third down situation pass as Abilene went back on top 22-19. Corpus took a late lead as Miles once again found Toric Goins for a 19-yard touchdown pass to make it 27-22. The Hammerhead defense got a game-clinching stop on fourth down and seven when David Bowie's pass fell incomplete.

Corpus Christi's defense collected two sacks and two interceptions in the winning effort as Abilene QB David Bowie finished with just 98 yards passing. WR Mike Carrillo led the Ruff Riders with 38 receiving yards. The loss sets the Ruff Riders back to 5-4 overall this season. Abilene will now have time to get healthy as they enter their bye week. The Ruff Riders next game will be on the road as they travel to face the Odessa Roughnecks on Saturday, June 13 from the Ector County Coliseum.
