Ruff Riders Sign Former Texas Tech WR/DB Archie (L.A.) Reed

ABILENE, TX. : The Abilene Ruff Riders announced late afternoon on Friday, November 20, 2009 that the team has signed former Texas Tech University WR/DB, Archie (L.A.) Reed, for the 2010 season. Reed (6'2", 212 lbs.) was a four-year letterman at Texas Tech playing at wide receiver and safety. As a senior in 2008, Reed made the transition from wide out to safety playing in ten games and collecting 19 total tackles with three pass break-ups. Reed was part of a defense that helped lead the Red Raiders to an 11-1 overall regular season record in 2008.

As a junior in 2007, Reed played in eight games at wide receiver and posted 16 receptions for 189 yards receiving. Reed additionally caught three passes for 21 yards against Baylor and caught three passes for 56 yards against UTEP. Reed also returned kickoffs during the 2007 season returning two kicks back for a total of 33 yards. Reed matched his single-game career high with four receptions versus SMU for a total of 35 yards. Reed saw significant playing time versus Virginia in the Gator Bowl recording three special teams tackles.

Reed had a solid year offensively during his sophomore campaign in 2006. In 13 games played, Reed caught 12 passes for 157 yards and two touchdown receptions. Reed was an important factor on special teams for the Red Raiders program during the season including five total tackles and a forced fumble on Tech's kickoff and punting units. Reed scored Tech's first points versus Missouri on a 30-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Graham Harrell. Reed started his first ever game in 2006 against Southeastern Louisiana and recorded his first career touchdown reception on a 22-yard pass.

As a red-shirt freshman in 2005, Reed played in ten games and caught 11 passes for 136 yards. Reed was an outstanding cover man on special teams and he made many significant receptions throughout the season to set up Tech touchdowns. Reed played his high school ball at Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas. Reed was classified as a four-star recruit coming out of Oak Ridge according to Max Emfinger Recruiting. During his senior season, Reed caught 34 passes for 409 yards and five touchdowns including two kickoffs returned for scores. Reed was additionally recruited by college programs such as Houston, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Texas A&M.
