Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. The Southern Illinois Miners have sold the contract of 2010 Frontier League All-Star Stephen Head to the Colorado Rockies organization as a left-handed pitcher.
Head was a pitcher and first baseman at the University of Mississippi where he was a three-time All-American. In 2005 the Indians selected him in the second round as a first baseman and later converted him to an outfielder. In 2010 he hit .265 and led the Miners with 13 home runs and 68 RBIs while splitting time between first base and right field.
Our coaching staff is very excited for Stephen to get this opportunity with the Rockies, Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. It was great to have him as a Miner and we wish him nothing but success in his route to get to the major leagues.
In three seasons at Ole Miss, he went 17-7 with a 2.32 ERA and 26 saves. He struck out 176 batters and walked just 62 in 213 innings of work. Last season he made his return to the mound for the first time since college, making two relief appearances for the Miners. He dotted the low 90s on the radar gun and struck out two batters in an inning and two-thirds.
Head, who turned 27 in January, is the 15th Miners player to sign with a major league organization since the team s inaugural 2007 season.
The Miners will open the 2011 season on Friday, May 20 on the road against the Gateway Grizzlies. The home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, May 24, at 7:05 p.m. against the Evansville Otters.
