Rochester Lancers News Release

(Rochester, NY) - The Rochester Lancers (4-3) lost a back and forth match 18-10 to the visiting Syracuse Silver Knights (4-5). The Lancers were led offensively by captain Mauricio Salles who had a pair of 3-point goals and Andrew Hoxie who had a goal and an assist. Marcelo Moreiro made 12 saves in goal for the Lancers and added an assist in the effort. The Lancers return to MASL action on Saturday when they travel to take on the Milwaukee Wave.

Less than two minutes into the match, the visitors struck first when Mario Swaby settled the rebound of a Marcos Chantel shot and slotted it home with his right foot giving Syracuse an early 2-0 lead. About five minutes later, the Lancers would level the match when Alex Megson slammed home the rebound of Hoxie's shot. Later, shortly after Syracuse killed a Swaby blue card, Swaby found Bo Jelovic who scored from just beyond the 3-point arc to give the Silver Knights a 5-2 lead after the opening quarter of action.

The Lancers tallied the equalizer a little over halfway through the second quarter. Marcelo played a long ball to Salles who settled it and struck a 3-point shot that beat Bryan O'Quinn to the short side and tied the match at 5-5. The Silver Knights would retake the lead less than a minute later when Neto finished the set up from Slavisa Ubiparapovic making the score 7-5 for the visitors. Syracuse struck again just 27 seconds later as Anthony Grant set up Antonio Manfret for the goal to give Syracuse a 9-5 lead at the half.

Neither team managed to find the net during the third quarter, although Rochester continued to press. Bryan O'Quinn was up to the challenge, shutting the door each time to keep the score 9-5 after three periods of play.

A little over three minutes into the fourth quarter, Syracuse saw Swaby tally his second of the match when he powered home a rebound of a Manfret shot. Two minutes later, Salles responded with his second 3-point goal of the game when he took a quick restart and blasted it home with his favored left foot making the score 11-8. The excitement didn't last long for the Lancers however as just 19 seconds later, Ubiparapovic fed Neto who's shot would hit the post and then hit a Lancers defender and into the goal. Rochester kept fighting back and with a little less than five minutes left, Brian Knapp would pass it hard off the end boards and Hoxie would finish it to pull the Lancers to within three points, 13-10. Syracuse would answer back a little over a minute later when Darren Toby scored off the rebound of an Ubiparapovic shot that was just wide of goal. With Jeremy Ortiz on as the sixth attacker and under two minutes left, Jelovic would ice the match for Syracuse when he scored a 3-point goal from his own half of the field and into the empty Lancers goal to make the final score 18-10 to the Syracuse Silver Knights.
