Rochester Knighthawks News Release
Rochester Knighthawks goalie Aaron Bold reared back and fired a strike last night, but still fell 50 pins short against fan Karen Readel in bowling. Despite the setback, it was all in good fun and for charity as the Knighthawks, the dance team and mascot joined fans to raise money for CURE Childhood Cancer Association.
"I got beat really bad by an 8-year-old at tennis and I just lost in bowling. I don't have a lot of experience," said John Grant Jr. about his success in the Wii competitions against fans. "I love coming to help out at Bugaboo Creek. It is always a well-run event."
The Knighthawks lacrosse team raised $1,117.76 at the Fourth Annual "Tip-A-Knighthawk" charity event Tuesday at Bugaboo Creek Steak House in Henrietta. All the proceeds went to CURE Childhood Cancer Association. With the donation, the Knighthawks have raised $4,020.76 this year for CURE and increased their four-year total to over $19,000.
"We are grateful to the Knighthawks and their staff for a great night," said CURE Childhood Cancer Association Executive Director Brian Wirth. "Through their efforts they raised an additional $1117.76 for CURE. We appreciate all their hard work and time to make this event successful for the fourth straight year."
Bold and Grant, and Knightingales Emilie, Jenine and Stefanie collected tips for CURE by selling raffle tickets and playing Wii against fans. They spent three hours working to fund an organization that is committed to "improving the lives of families coping with childhood cancer and chronic blood disorders by providing emotional, educational and financial assistance." Bugaboo's mascot, Moxie the Moose, and the Knighthawks mascot, R. Thunder, also entertained kids and adults. Special guests included Amerks Hall of Fame forward Scott Metcalfe and Amerks Mike Caruso, Andrew Sweetland and Adam Comrie.
The festivities also included a raffle featuring donations from local businesses, the Rochester Red Wings, Minnesota Swarm, Six Nations Arrows, Amerks and Knighthawks. The top two auction items were a game-worn 2006 Minto Cup autographed Craig Point jersey and a game-worn Shawn Evans Knighthawks signed jersey. The Evans jersey raised $209 and was won by Kevin Readel, while Sue Chichester took home the Point jersey.
"I think Tip-A-Knighthawk was very successful this year. The prizes donated attracted a wide range of fans of all ages. Aaron Bold and John Grant Jr. were also extremely great interacting with fans and playing Wii competitions with kids," said Amerks and Knighthawks Account Executive Shannon Burrows, who worked the team event. "They all seemed to love it! Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and ultimately the event contributed a very nice donation for CURE, which is most important at the end of the night."
In three days, Rochester will battle the West Division-leading Washington Stealth at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 24th. The Knighthawks can clinch a spot in the 2010 Champion's Cup Playoffs with a win over the Stealth OR with a Boston win over Buffalo. The game will be broadcast live on The Zone 94.1 FM and thezone941.com.
"It's the first playoff game of the season," said Grant. "We lose and we're out. We don't want to rely on the Buffalo/Boston game. We want to win and start some positive momentum."
