Rochester Concludes Regular Season
September 17, 2008 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Rochester Rhinos News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Rhinos closed their regular season tonight on the road with a match against the last place Miami FC. The Rhinos, who have already clinched a playoff spot, fell 1-0 to Miami, which is unable to earn a playoff spot regardless of the results of their remaining games.
In his first professional match, Rochester keeper Tim Melia certainly did not look like he was new to this level of play. Melia kept the Rhinos net on lockdown throughout the half, making a marvelous diving save in the 39th minute. On the opposite half of the pitch, the Rhinos did what they could to register their first goal against Miami this season, but were unable to put one past Miami's Sam Reynolds. Luke Kreamalmeyer and Alen Marcina had very close headers in the 27th and 29th minutes, respectively, but the half ended without a point on either side.
The second half saw a great deal of back-and-forth play with both teams having trouble defeating the opposing defense. Miami's Alex Afonso managed to break the season-long draw with a goal in the 73rd minute. Afonso increased his league lead to 15 goals with this unassisted goal into the bottom right corner past a diving Melia. It appeared that Rochester's Ryan Heins settled the score late in the match with a left-footer into the top left corner, but the goal was disallowed as a foul was called on Heins for knocking over Jarryd Goldberg. The match concluded 1-0, with Rochester totaling 41 points in the USL First Division standings.
