South Bend Cubs News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - The South Bend Cubs struggled to get their offense going as they failed to score in a 3-0 loss to the Fort Wayne Tincaps in the final game of the series. Despite having a few different chances, an interference call and a base running mistake proved to be the Cubs' demise.

In the loss, Cubs starter Duncan Robinson kept his hot-streak going by throwing four and 1/3 perfect innings to improve his total to 21-consecutive innings in which he gave up only one hit.

Regardless, Fort Wayne would go on to strike first in the sixth inning on G.K. Young 's seemingly fortuitous solo shot to right field.

South Bend would have had a chance to score with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom the sixth, but Vimael Machin came too far off third base and was caught in a run down for the third out of the inning before the Cubs could get anything going.

It also looked like the Cubs had something started in the bottom of the seventh inning as Roberto Caro singled with one out. Caro would go on to steal second base, but the umpires ruled that hitter Zack Short got in the way of the Fort Wayne catcher prompting an interference call, which ruled Short as the second out of the inning while Caro returned to first.

The Tincaps later scored again in the top of the eighth, this time adding two runs to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Once again it was G.K. Young leading Fort Wayne as he singled with no outs only to be followed by a double, a sacrifice fly, and a single to score Young and Rod Boykin, which was more than enough to win the final game.

Overall, South Bend finished with seven hits, five walks, and eight offensive strikeouts. After the loss, they are now 8-3 against Fort Wayne this season.

ROBINSON'S IMPRESSIVE START: Coming into the game, Cubs starter Duncan Robinson was 5-1 with a 1.36 ERA over 39 and 2/3 innings pitched. The Dartmouth alum would continue his remarkable stat line by throwing seven innings while striking out eight Tincaps hitters.

Though his fastball maxed out at 91.0 mph, Robinson worked masterfully in the zone only allowing four hits over the seven frames.

The 6'6" right-hander also impressed in the fourth inning as he battled back from a 3-0 count to strikeout Fernando Tatis Jr., the son of 11-year Major Leaguer Fernando Tatis.

Robinson would carry his perfect game through four and 1/3 innings before Eguy Rosario hit a single to break up his bid for the perfecto. Nevertheless, with a good throw from Cubs leftfielder Kevonte Mitchell, Rosario was easily thrown out at second.

In the seven innings, Robinson allowed four hits and one run. He is now 5-2 on the season with a 1.35 ERA spanning 46 and 2/3 innings pitched this season.

WHAT'S NEXT:

Cubs: South Bend will travel to Dayton (OH) to take on the second place Dayton Dragons in their 16th consecutive game of a 21-game stint without any days off. The Cubs are 5-2 against Dayton so far this season.

Tincaps: Fort Wayne will make the trip down to Bowling Green (KY) to take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods in a three game series before returning to Parkview Field to take on the Dragons after their series against the Cubs.
