Published on June 9, 2014 under United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Pitttsburgh Riverhounds claimed their first victory in Rochester as they defeated the Rhinos 3-2 on Saturday night at Sahlen's Stadium. Brian Fekete, Rob Vincent and Jose Angulo scored for Pittsburgh, which also claimed its first win of the USL PRO season after falling behind in the first half.
The Riverhounds had never taken victory in 18 previous visits to Rochester, and had fallen 1-0 at home earlier this season to the Rhinos. Rochester also took the lead in Saturday's contest as Minh Vu's free kick gave his side the lead in the 25th minute.
Pittsburgh hit back just before the halftime break from a corner on the right as Brian Fekete flicked home a finish from Danny Earls' near-post delivery to level the score. Earls was the catalyst as the Riverhounds took the lead with 17 minutes to go when Vincent headed home another corner kick.
The Riverhounds added to their lead in the 84th minute as reigning USL PRO Most Valuable Player Jose Angulo finished from close range after a good piece of interplay with Joseph Ngwenya. Angulo's finish proved necessary as the Rhinos pulled a goal back through J.C. Banks from the penalty spot in the 90th minute, but Pittsburgh was able to see out stoppage time to take a historic victory.
FRIDAY
WILMINGTON 2, OKLAHOMA CITY 2: The Wilmington Hammerheads FC twice took the lead only for OKC Energy FC to equalizer each time, as the two teams played to a draw at Legion Stadium.
Wilmington took the lead on the stroke of halftime as Sammy Ochoa was played in behind the Energy defense and fired a low shot into the left corner from the right side of the penalty area. OKC got back on level terms five minutes into the second half, however, as Philip Lund was able to beat the offside trap before he lifted his finish over Quillan Roberts to make it 1-1.
The Hammerheads regained the lead in the 65th minute when Tom Parratt's near-post finish from a corner kick just made it over the line before it was cleared by OKC's defense. Wilmington was reduced to 10 men with just under 20 minutes to go, however, and the Energy took advantage as former Hammerhead forward Kyle Greig headed home a finish with 12 minutes to go to level the score again.
SATURDAY
ORANGE COUNTY 4, DAYTON 3: A flurry of three goals in five minutes helped the Orange County Blues FC take victory against the Dayton Dutch Lions at Anteater Stadium. Chris Cortez scored twice for the Blues, who had to hold off a late rally to earn all three points.
Dayton opened the scoring in the 12th minute as Columbus Crew loanee Matt Walker found the back of the net, but the Blues surged into the lead as Cortez and Josh Suggs scored a minute apart to make it 2-1 in the 19th minute. Allan Russell made it 3-1 three minutes later as Orange County took a commanding lead into the break.
The Blues added to their lead midway through the second half as Cortez rose to head home at the right post for his second, but the Dutch Lions found a way back into the contest with 11 minutes to go when Eli Garner struck to make it 4-2. Joel DeLass also scored in stoppage time for Dayton, but time ran out before it could make a run at an equalizer.
ORLANDO 2, MONTREAL RESERVES 1: Orlando City got a pair of goals by FC Dallas loanee Cobi Span as it maintained its undefeated start to the season with victory against the Montreal Impact Reserves at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex.
Span gave the Lions the lead in the 12th minute as he turned home a low cross from the left by Luke Boden at the top of the six-yard area. He doubled the lead at the hour mark as a good solo run from midfield was capped by a shot from 20 yards that found the left corner of the net.
Montreal pulled a goal back with 15 minutes to go as Maxim Tissot finished an excellent counter-attack, but the Lions held firm defensively to maintain their lead at the top of the USL PRO standings.
RICHMOND 1, HARRISBURG 0: Matt Delicâte scored the only goal as the Richmond Kickers continued their outstanding run of home form with victory against the Harrisburg City Islanders at City Stadium.
Delicâte's goal came in the ninth minute as he was able to get onto a cross from the left by Sascha Görres and angle his header at the far post back across goal into the left corner. Delicâte found the back of the net again in the first half, only to be denied by an offside flag, but Richmond was strong defensively throughout the second half to claim all three points.
SACRAMENTO 1, ARIZONA 1: Chad Bartlome scored in second-half stoppage time to earn Sacramento Republic FC a point against Arizona United SC in front of a sellout crowd of 20,231 at Hughes Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, Arizona took the lead midway through the second as a free kick by Scott Morrison came back off the crossbar, and London Woodberry was on hand to put away the rebound. Sacramento grabbed a late point, however, as a corner kick by Rodrigo Lopez was headed in by Bartlome to extend his side's undefeated streak to five games.
CHARLOTTE 1, OKLAHOMA CITY 1: Wells Thompson scored an equalizer early in the second half as honors finished even between the Charlotte Eagles and OKC Energy FC at the Queens Sports Complex.
Oklahoma City took the lead just past the half-hour mark as a cross from the right by Max Gunderson pinballed around in the penalty area before it came to Steven Perry, who finished from eight yards out. Charlotte hit back three minutes into the second half, however, as Thompson was able to run onto a good through ball by Fred Sekyere for a first-time finish into the right corner.
SUNDAY
LA GALAXY II 5, SEATTLE RESERVES 1: Jack McBean and Bradford Jamieson IV each had a pair of goals as the LA Galaxy II romped past the Dayton Dutch Lions FC at the StubHub Center.
Dayton had a good chance to take the lead as Sebastian Thuriere's header went over in the seventh minute, but from then on the Galaxy II clicked into gear offensively. Jamieson IV struck a minute later as he flicked home a low cross by Charlie Rugg, and McBean made it 2-0 in the 25th minute with a good turning shot from 12 yards.
Los Dos pulled away with three goals in the final six minutes of the half. McBean grabbed the first as he poked home a finish from close range before Rugg added to his earlier assist with a good finish from the right side of the penalty area. Jamieson IV then bagged his second at the stroke of halftime as he was played in and finished into the left side of the net. Dayton got a goal back through Aaron Schoenfeld with just under 20 minutes to go, but the Galaxy II remained in control for the remainder of the contest.
